  • 753 BCE

    Founding of Rome

    The year when the city of Rome was found. In the well known legend the two founders are Romolus and Remus. This is the starting point of the Roman calendar.
  • Period: 753 BCE to 510 BCE

    The era of the Roman Kingdom

    The leaders of this regime were the Etruscan kings. (There were 7 of them in the history.)
  • 510 BCE

    The fall of the kingdom and the rise of the republic

    The last etruscan king: Tarquinius Superbus got banished what meant the end of the kingdom and the uprising of the Roman republic.
  • Period: 510 BCE to 29 BCE

    The era of the Roman Republic

    On paper it was a democratic system but in the reality it had never worked as a democratic system shold. The plebians never had real power and the chance of decision making was in the hand of the wealthy politicians and in those people's hands who owned important magistrates.

    The born of the first Roman law codes

    The year when the first Roman law codes have been set up. They were written on 12 tabels.
  • 60 BCE

    The first Triumvirate formed

    The three members of the first Triumvirate were: Pompeius Magnus, Licinius Crassus and Julius Caesar. They helped each other to reach their political goals.

    Caesar crosses the Rubicon

    When Caesar crossed the Rubicon (border of Italian peninsula) with his army he violated an important rule, and a civil broke out owing to this decision.
  • 44 BCE

    The death of Caesar

    Caesar got assasinated by Brutus, Cassius and some other politicans. "Et tu, mi fili, Brute."

    The second Triumvirate formed

    The year when the second Triumvirate formed. Their main goal to hunt down the killers of Caesar.
  • 42 BCE

    Brutus and Cassius were defeated

    The members of the second Triumvirate (Mark Anthony, Octavian and Lepidius) reach their goal, and they defeat the killers of Caesar.
  • Period: 29 BCE to 284

    The era of the principate

    The leaders were the emperors who were as respected as gods and they had almost infinite power in the empire. In this system the Senate was powerless. But they tried to hide that this is a dictatorship.

    The era of the dominate

    In one thing this is different from the principate: they never tried to hide the dictatorship.

    The Christianity won't be illegal, in fact it became the official religion in the Roman Empire owing to Theodosius.

    The big Roman empire broke apart into two parts: The Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire.

    The last emperor: Romolus Augustulus deposed and this means the end of the Ancient times.
