  • Election of Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the United States. He was also the first Republican to be elected because he strongly opposed slavery. As a result, several Southern states seceded.
  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter was a federal fort that was fired by the Confederates. The confederates continued attacking the fort until they surrendered. As a result, the Civil War started.
  • Battle of Bull Run

    The first Battle of Bull Run was the first major land battle of the Civil War. Thomas Jonathan Jackson prevented the Union from capturing Richmond. The Union later fled which lead to the Confederate victory.
  • Monitor vs. Merrimack

    Monitor vs. Merrimack was the most important naval battle of the Civil War. It was important because the Monitor and the Merrimack were the first ironclad ships to battle against each other. The battle lead to the U.S. being the strongest naval power in the world.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The most deadliest battle of the Civil War. Both sides lost thousands of men with the Union victory. The victory resulted in Abraham Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation.
  • Battle of Fredricksburg

    The Battle of Fredricksburg was the costliest defeat of the North. General Burnside led the Union against General Lee who led the Confederate. The Union ended up having twice as many deaths as the amount the Confederate had. General Burnside was replaced by General Hooker after the Union lost.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln that freed all slaves in the South. However, it only applied to states that had seceded from the Union. The freedom depended upon Union military victory.
  • Federal Draft Act

    The Federal Draft Act was signed by Abraham Lincoln. It lead to several people fighting in the Civil War. It later caused riots in New York.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War towards Union victory. It was lead by Generals Lee and Meade. The battle caused the Confederates to retreat from the Union so that they wouldn't make any more offensive moves.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    The Battle of Vicksburg was the battle where the Union took over the Mississippi River. It was lead by General Grant. The battle helped Grant’s military career so that he would become the general in the East.
  • Atlanta Campaign

    The Atlanta Campaign was a series of battles fought in Northwestern Georgia and around Atlanta. Union General Sherman invaded Georgia to capture Atlanta. As a result, Lincoln was re-elected as president.
  • Re-election of Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln was re-elected and won against George B. McClellan. Lincoln ran as a Republican and McClellan ran as a Democratic. He was re-elected because he formed the National Union Party.
  • 13th Amendment

    The amendment which stated that slavery had officially ended. This was a major part of the Reconstruction Plan. This granted freedom to all slaves.
  • Surrender at Appomattox Court House

    When General Lee surrenders to General Grant. General Lee lost a large amount of his army compared to General Grant. As a result, this ended the Civil War.
  • Assassination of Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater. Andrew Johnson became president as a result. However, he was a Democratic unlike Lincoln so his views were very different from Lincoln's.
  • Reconstruction Begins

    Lincoln, Johnson, and the Radical Republicans all had a plan for reconstruction. They wanted to rebuild the U.S. after the Civil War. Lincoln began his plan when the war was still going on becuase he was so convinced that they were going to win.
  • Impeachment of Johnson

    Andrew Johnson became president after Lincoln was assassinated. He was the first president to be impeached. Several people distrusted his views so much that his presidency had to be removed.
  • 14th Amendment

    The amendment which stated that everybody has equal rights as citizens. It was proposed in response to issues related to previous slaves during the Civil War. Everybody is now considered as a citizen of the U.S. regardless of race or color.
  • 15th Amendment

    The amendment which stated that all men had the right to vote regardless of race. However, women still didn't have this right. This amendment was still a major change for most people in the U.S.
  • Reconstrucion Ends

    When the North took the military watch that they had placed in the South. It showed that the U.S. was going to become successful again soon. It also gave African American men the right to vote.
