    Explorer John Cabot headed to North America for his second expedition of the New World. During his trip, Cabot explored the coast of Georgia. Cabot became the first European explorer to travel and explore the coast of Georgia. This event is significant because it was the first time that an European explored the coast of Georgia. It is important to note that Georgia did not become an English colony until two hundred and thirty five years later, in 1733.

    James Oglethorpe and his associates petitioned the King of England for a royal charter for the establishment of Georgia, named after King George II.This event was significant because without a royal charter Georgia would not have become a colony. The royal charter was first step in the creation of a colony.

    Georgia became an English colony in 1733. It was the thirteenth and last English colony. The first permanent English colony of Georgia was established in Savannah, GA by James Oglethorpe and the Trustees. This was an important event because it was the beginning of Georgia as a colony. The colony of Georiga would became a buffer colony and home for "worthy poor."

    New laws were suggested to the English Parliament by the Trustees. The three new laws were the prohibition of slavery, the prohibition of rum, and trading laws for colonists when making deals with Native Americans. It is important to note that the laws were presented to the English parliament before they were enforced. The laws were imperative to Georgia history because they were exclusive to Georgia and colonies were practicing these things which became unlawful in Georgia.

  • Mary Musgrove (GA)

    Mary Musgrove (GA)
    Mary Musgrove was James Oglethorpe's translator and an important figure in Georgia history. Beginning in 1737, Musgrove helped with acquisition of land from the Creeks. During this same year, Musgrove remarried after the passing of her first husband. Musgrove was one of the most important women in colonial Georgia. She was a Native American woman who was able to become a great success as a translator and a trader. Musgrove was important to development and success of Georgia as colony.

    The last battle of the War of Jenkins’ Ear, the Battle of Bloody Marsh, was fought. The Battle of Bloody Marsh was fought in 1742. Spanish troop attempted to invade and occupy Georgia but were overpowered by the British army. The war had an extremely high number of causalities for both sides. It is known as one of the bloodiest battles. The battle was important to Georgia history because it was the first time the Spanish tried to invade Georgia and was a great victory for England.

    The First Continental Congress was held in 1774 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Congress wanted all the colonies to unite and stop trading with England. However, Georgia refused to send representatives. Many colonists in Georgia did not want to go against The Crown. This event was important because Georgia did not have representation in The First Continental Congress. This meeting was one of the most significant events for the independence and establishment of The United States.

    Georgia began to ban trading with England in 1775. During the Second Provincial Congress meeting in Savannah in 1775, Georgia decided to accept the Second Continental Congress and the Association's banishment of trading with England. Georgia joined the rest of colonies who were no longer trading with England. This was important event since there was a divide with Georgia colonists on whether would remain loyal to England or join the other colonies during their fight for independence.

    The Siege of Savannah was one of the most severe battles in Georgia during the Revolutionary War. The siege was the second bloodiest battles fought in Georgia during the war. It was a important event in Georgia history because it was the first times England would make it way to the South. The British army was able to defeat the French and Continental armies. Furthermore, the British were able to keep their control over one of the most important cities in Georgia, Savannah.

    Georgia becomes the fourth state to ratify the Constitution.With the ratification of the Constitution, Georgia became an official state of newly independent country of the United States. After the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787, Georgia and nine other states ratified the Constitution. This meant that Georgia was using the Constitution as the framework for governing. This event of ratification was important because Georgia was now an official state of the US.

    Gold was found in Georgia in 1829. With the discovering of gold, the second most important gold rushes in US history began. Many flocked to Georgia for possibility of economic prosperity that gold promised. This large influx of people led to land being taken away from Native Americans. Lotteries were held that took away land from the Cherokee and Creeks. This was important event because this began removal of Native Americans from the state. Furthermore, it led to the Trail of Tears.

    Worcester v. Georgia was case that allowed the federal government to have control over Native American, where they could settle and their land. The case was significant in Georgia history because it began the oppression that Native American would endure for years to come. Native American lands were taken away because the Supreme Court determined that the federal government had rights over all Native American land. This led to Native American being removed from the state of Georgia.

    Native Americans, including the Cherokee and Creek tribes, were forcefully removed from the state of Georgia. This was one of the darkest times in United States history. Thousands of Native Americans were forced to move west. Many died during their forced journey. This event was significant because it is an example of how terrible and horrid the state of Georgia and the federal government were towards Native Americans.

    The city of Atlanta was officially named and established in 1847. However, the city is not a newly established city since it was previously named Marthasville. Atlanta was and still is one of the most important cities in the South. The founding and establishment of Atlanta is important to Georgia history because it is the capital of the state and one of the most significant cities in the United States both economically and socially.

    The Civil War began in 1861. It was a war between the southern and northern regions of the United States. There were several reasons why the Civil War began including the enslavement of African Americans. Georgia seceded from the Union in 1861 and would later join the Confederacy. This event was significant because it was one of the most important wars in US history and one of the few wars fought on US soil.

    Jim Crow laws began in Georgia. The laws disenfranchised African Americans throughout the state. Jim Crow laws kept African American segregated from whites in all public areas. This meant that blacks and whites could not occupy the same spaces. For example, African Americans had to sit at the back of bus and drink from different water fountains. These laws were significant because they continued the racial discrimination of African American throughout the state of Georgia for decades.

    The Ku Klux Klan (GA)
    The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was reestablished in Stone Mountain, GA in 1915. The KKK is a white supremacist group that spreads hate and violence throughout the state of Georgia. After the reestablishment of the group, the KKK began to not only target African American but also Catholics, immigrants, Jews and labor groups. The reestablishment of the KKK was important because this hate group is still present today and continues to use violence throughout the state and country.

    In order to have more peanut production in Georgia, George Washington Carver went to The House Ways and Means Committee to attest to the importance of peanuts and the plantation of it throughout Georgia in order to benefit Georgia farmers. This event helped Georgia farmers tremendously.

Furthermore, it is the busiest airport in the world today. Hartsfield is known internationally as an excellent airport. It is important to Georgia history because it has brought economic growth to the state for several decades.

    The Atlanta Negro Voters League was created in order to help increase African Americans voting. The League assisted with getting individual registered. The League was important because they assisted with strengthen African American voters who had been underrepresented for years.

For example, The University of Georgia and Georgia Tech allowed African American students to attend after the federal courts order the state of Georgia to enroll African American students into universities. The Civil Rights movement was important because it was a time that African Americans began to fight for their basic human rights.

    Protesters took to the streets of the all-white county of Forsyth. Roughly 20,000 protesters trudged and protested in Cummings, GA. This event was significant because it showed how racially divided parts of Georgia were still nearly a two decades after the Civil Rights Movement began

    One of the greatest sporting events came to the state of Georgia, the Olympics were played in Atlanta, GA. Atlanta Summer Olympics brought revenue to the city and the state of Georgia. Thousands of international fans come to the state of Georgia. This was important for Atlanta since it made it known internationally and it brought economic developement to the state.

    A bill was signed to remake the state flag. The state flag of Georgia at the time was partially made with the Confederate flag. The flag was deemed racist by many since many believed that it still represented a time period where African Americans were enslaved and minorities were discriminated against. The debate and redesign was imperative in Georgia history.
