The code of Hammurabi is one of the earliest records of written law. King Hammurabi of Babylon (now Iran) had nearly 300 laws carved in common of stone. More than 30 of the laws had the consequence of death. Hammurabi code 196: If a man shall put out the eye of another man his eye shall be put out (an eye for an eye).The Hammurabi code impacted our legal system because it influence future rule to adopt similar codes of behavior. -
Emperor Justinian realize that the old Roman laws were a mess and his goal was to organize them to make them accessible to all. Justinian chose 10 men to review over 1600 books full of Roman laws, The men were able to create Justinian‘s code with just over 4000 laws. many of the laws Justinian reflected the point of view of his wife Theodora. This is where women’s rights came into play. Justinian‘s code was used as a foundation for many European countries legal systems. -
The King established a team of judges that would roam the country settling cases. They would rely on presidents to make decisions called case law. Judges decisions could be appealed to the monarchs. Common-law evolved into a system of rules based on Precedent. Emerged in England during the middle ages. -
The Magna Carta was a famous document that the English nobility forced the king, John to sign in 1215. The Magna Carta recognized the principle of the rule of law(in England), which is the idea that all people/rules and commoners alike have to follow the same laws. The kings use to run wild because they were not subject to the law. It also introduced the idea of habeas corpos, which entitled people accused of crime a trial in a reasonable amount of time. -
