  • New Zealanders became New Zealand Citizens

    In 1948 New Zealanders became New Zealand Citizens. Before they became citizens of New Zealand, they were British citizens.
  • Queen Elizabeth II visited New Zealand.

    In 1953, Queen Elizabeth II visited New Zealand at the end of December. She and her husband stayed in New Zealand for almost 6 weeks, traveling around as a part of a six-month tour of the Commonwealth.
  • Sir Edmund Hillary Summited Mt Everest

    In 1953 Sir Edmund Hillary Summited Mount Everest, the largest mountain in the world. Hillary became the first ever New Zealander to climb Mount Everest.

    Lynne Cox, was the first woman who swam Cook Strait (North Island to South Island). February 4 was when Lynne Cox swam from the North to South island, it took her 12 hours and 7 minutes as she battled through the strong winds and rough seas.
  • Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior

    10 of July 1985 when the Rainbow Warrior sank into the Auckland Ocean. It was caused by the retaliation for protests of Greenpeace against French nuclear testing.
