Timeline 1850-1861

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin is a book written by Harriet Beecher and spoke about the terrible conditions of Slavery. It brought more tension between the North and the South as it was felt as it misrepresented slavery and made slave owners look bad.
  • Republican Party

    The Republican Party was created in response to the Kansas Nebraska Act. This party was created primarily to fight against the expansion of slavery and was made up of mostly people in the North
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    The Kansas Nebraska Act was created to do 3 things: Repeal the Missouri Compromise, create 2 new territories, and allow for popular sovereignty. This act was later responsible for what would be know as Bleeding Kansas.
  • Bloody Kansas

    Bloody Kansas or Bleeding Kansas was the point in which the proslavery and antislavery were fighting violently against each other for the vote on the territories. This issue caused by the Kansas Nebraska Act later lead to the civil war as it showed that the decision of the territory's admittance could not be resolved without bloodshed.
  • Brooks-Sumner Incident

    The Brooks-Sumner Incident was a man named Preston Brooks who beat Charles Sumner with a cane. This incident split both sides more due to Charles Sumner speaking about slavery and is said that both became hero's in their own regions.
  • Election of 1856

    The Election of 1856 ended with the Democrat James Buchanan, who was a former prime minister from Great Britain. He was a weak leader and due to his weaker leadership was unable to settle issues that lead to the civil war. First time a republican ran for presidency.
  • Lecompton Constitution

    The Lecompton Constitution was created by the Proslavery and was a state constitution for Kansas in which it would allow slaveholding to be legal. This caused a rise in tensions since the antislavery did not like this and the constitution was rejected.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott was a former slave in which he was taken to court to decide if he had rights or not. The decision ended with him losing and they said that those who are of African descent do not have any rights since they are not citizens. This caused a rise in tensions since it touched the topic of slavery.
  • House Divided Speech

    Lincoln's speech in 1858 spoke about the Union and how it would become a slave or a free nation and not in-between. He stated that he did not believe this would happen but the people who were listening seemed to ignore this and instead thought he was speaking about going to war. This speech made tensions rise and many thought Lincoln wanted war.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    The Lincoln Douglas Debates were a series of debates concerning the issue of slavery between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. In these debates was Lincolns speech in which they thought he was wanting a civil war.
  • Harpers Ferry

    The Harpers Ferry raid was a failure in which John Brown attempted to take a stronghold in an arsenal and retrieve weaponry for the slaves. Although it failed it caused a rise in tensions as an attack took place on an proslavery territory.
  • John Brown

    John Brown was a key leader in the abolitionist movement before the civil war. He played a role in things like the Harpers Ferry raid. His ideas caused issues and was later hanged.
  • Election 1860

    Lincoln wins the election and the Sothern states secede from the union since they felt as if their presence in politics no longer existed. This ideas lead to the separation and later lead to the civil war.
  • Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Address

    Lincoln attempted to help the south and promised to not interfere with slavery where it already existed and hold off the federal government from certain areas to stop the violence and hostility. He attempted to hold the union together.
  • Secession

    On this date the Civil war began and 4 other states chose to secede from the Union.
