  • First Political Party

    Thomas Jefferson started the first Republican party. At the same time, Alexander Hamilton started the Federalist party.

  • Era of good feelings

    The Jefferson Republicans gained over the Federalists because Alexander Hamilton died and the Federalists were left with no leader.

  • National Republicans and Democrats

    National Republican and Democratic parties were formed.

  • The Whig Party

    The National Republicans regrouped and became the Whig Party. The Whig party was more united than the Democrats.

  • The Republican Party

    The Northern Whigs and anti-slavery Democrats joined forces to create the Republican Party.

  • The Donkey and The Elephant

    The donkey represents the Democrats and the elephant represents the Republicans.

    The Democrats and the Republicans fight over who has the strongest party in the government.
