Charley goes to Ft. Snelling
Charley goes to Fort Snelling to sign up for the Union Army even though his mother wants him stay because if father was killed by a horse. -
Charley begins physical training
Charley and his regiment begin their drills. They also learn how to shoot a .58 caliber mineball musket. -
Regiment leaves for St. Paul, Minnesota
The regiment is taken to St. Paul to begin their journey to Washington D.C and then to the South. -
First battle of Bull Run
Charley's assumptions are wrong about the Confederates being weak and unable to fight. The Union is defeated during the first day. Charley witnesses a lot of violence. -
Night and second battle of Bull Run
Charley thinks the lights floating around in the field are fireflies but they are actually Union and Confederate soldiers with lanterns checking the dead or wounded. The next day
Charley goes back into battle but no Confederates are there. -
General McClellan becomes commander of the Union.
The Union Army's general is replaced by General George McClellan. Charley cannot do much because he has aquired dysantarie. -
Charley's Second Battle
Charley heads into his second battle after he recovers from dysantary. He meets a new soldier called Nelson who ends up getting shot in the stomach. He asks Charley to help but Nelson shoots himself. -
Charley trades with Confederates.
Rumors spread around the camp saying General McClellan is afraid to attack. While waiting to attack Charley trades with a Confederate soldier and they both agree the fighting is pointless. -
Charley's third battle.
The Confederate Calvary charges at Charley and his regiment but they end up destroying the calvary. Charley thinks he has been shot so he is sent to the surgeon where he finds out it was the blood of other soldiers. So the surgeon asks him to help make a wall out of dead bodies five feet high and 30 feet long to block the wind. -
The Battle of Gettysburg
Charley feels bad for the Rebs because he knows the horrors of crossing meadows and being out in the open. As the Confederates charged up the hill, Charley's regiment counterattacks and charges at them. Charley is hit in the left shoulder and thigh and is sent home. -
June, 1867
Charley considers himself "old" by crossing meadows. He goes to a creek alomst everyday to have a picnic. In his picnic he usually has food and a Confederate revolver. Charely thinks about the Civil War every time. The book ends when Charley thinks that the Confederate revolver is "pretty".
