Sloths were discovered 35 million years ago, in Veraguas (Panama)
-
To start off, the popultion of three toed sloths was not big to begin with. There was an estimated 1000 of them there populating the tiny island of Veraguas (Panama).
-
The three-toed sloths population started to decrease because of the deforestation of the surrounding area.
-
Numbers of an already low species count decreased as years went on due to deforestation
-
As of 2001, the pygmy three-toed sloth was recognized as a species! but the damage has already been done to th habitat of these creatures.
-
The pygmy three-toed sloths have been added to the endangered species list as "critically endangered'' there were only 100 left at the time.
-
The last recorded number of three-toed sloths is less than 100, making them one of the most critically endangered species on earth.
-
Since 2014, scientists gathered to the tiny island of Veraguas, to keep the population in check of these sloths. They make sure the sloth population does not decline even more than it has, they breed the sloths so the population does not decline and they perform scientific tests to make sure the sloths are safe and healthy living in this habitat.
-
Scientists are still watching over these sloths on the tiny island in panama. They are constantly making sure the population does not drop and that the sloths can live safely in this environment
