    Tito dies, and without his tight control of ethnic tensions, Nationalist tensions sprang up. His death paved the groundwork for the mass genocide that was going to occur.
  • Milosevic Takes Power

    Milosevic Takes Power
    Slobodan Milosevic is elected the leader of the Serbian Communist Party. He will come to be known as the mastermind of the genocide and amass nicknames such as the Butcher of the Balkans.
  • Slovenia and Croatia Declare Independence

    Slovenia and Croatia Declare Independence
    After the declaration, the Yugo-Slav Army sends forces and for ten days fighting ensues. After the cease-fire is written up in Slovenia. War breaks out in Croatia with the Serbs taking land they feel belong to them. The Croats fight back and genocide ensues. By the end of the year, 1/3 of Croatia belongs to Serbia. Serbian Krajina was found in Croatia this state was not recognized by the international community.
  • Operation Storm

    Operation Storm
    Croatia launches and counter-attack to take all of the Serbian held lands in Croatia back. Thousands of Serbs are forced to flee to Serbian held territories in Bosnia. The Dayton Peace Accords restore peace to the area temporarily.
  • Milosevic Becomes President

    Milosevic Becomes President
    Milosevic becomes President of Yugo Slavia. A separatist group is formed and known as KLA. There is open fighting between Serbian police and KLA militiamen.
  • Fighting Intensifies

    Fighting grows worse between KLA and the Serbian Police civilians get caught up in the fighting and suffer severe repercussions from the Serbian Police.
  • NATO Peace Talks

    NATO issues an ultimatum forcing both sides to sit down and have peace talks. They fail and NATO launches Air Strikes that continue for 78 days. An arrangement is made and the Serbs agree to withdraw from Kosovo. Kosovo becomes a protectorate of the United Nations.
  • Milosevic Loses Power

    Milosevic Loses Power
    Vojislav Kostunica claims victory in an election over Milosevic. Milosevic demands a runoff, in response 1 million people flood to Belgrade to attack the Parliament building. Milosevic is forced to flee and is replaced by Vojislav Kostunica.
  • Political Changes Occur

    Political Changes Occur
    The European Union begins to lift economic sanctions and offer aid. The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia joins the United Nations. In parliamentary elections, the Reformist Alliance wins by a landslide, and Zoran Djindjic goes on to become the Serbian Prime Minister.
  • Milosevic Arrested

    Milosevic Arrested
    Milosevic is arrested in Belgrade and is put on trial for War Crimes and Genocide. He is found guilty and lives the rest of his life in prison.
