    Halifax Explosion
    The Halifax explosion was the biggest explosion without nuclear bombs. Killing 1,800 people and injuring another 9,000, the Halifax explosion was a huge deal at the time. It was caused by two boats colliding together going through a narrow passage.
  • Spanish Influenza Epidemic

    Spanish Influenza Epidemic
    After the war ended, the troops coming back from Europe brought the Spanish flu back with them causing a huge outbreak. This virus, affecting mostly the young and healthy, killed 50,000 people. It lasted 2 years and had a big lasting effect on Canada.
  • Women allowed to vote

    Women allowed to vote
    When Canada first became a country, only men were allowed to vote. During the war, while most of the men were gone, women took on their rolls by going to work and keeping the house fires burning. After so long, women got the respect they deserved and were allowed to vote in 1918 (as long as they meet the same qualifications as men).
  • Winnipeg General Strike

    From May 15th, 1919 to June 25th, 1919 The Winnipeg general strike took place. This strike was the biggest strike in all of Canada's history. Over 30,000 left work to get the right of collective bargaining in some workspaces.

    Jazz music became very popular in the 1920s! Artists like Duke Ellington and Oscar Peterson were huge. Now that WWI was over people were having the time of their lives dancing and singing all day long.

    The Group Of seven was a group of 7 artists who painted Canadian landscapes. Including people like Lawren Harris and Franz Johnston, The Group Of Seven became very popular worldwide. The group formed and had it's first exhibit in 1920!
  • Finding Insulin

    Insulin is a medicine that has saved millions of diabetic lives. The cure was discovered here, in Toronto, on January 11th, 1922. Founded by Frederick G. Banting and his assistant Charles Herbert Best, insulin has changed the medical world forever.
  • The Edmonton Grads

    The Edmonton Grads
    The Edmonton Grads were the first all-women Canadian championship-winning basketball team. Their first game was in 1923 and they finished in 1940. They won the Underwood International Trophy (a Can-Am tournament) seventeen years straight! they also went to the summer Olympics in 1924 and won undefeated!

    Spectator sports have been very big for a while but in the 1920s it started to boom. One example of this is in hockey where it became big after the first broadcast was created by Foster Hewitt on February 8th 1923 . Sports stars also started to become a thing with Lionel Conacher. Lionel was on national teams for hockey, lacrosse, baseball and football.

    The great depression started with economic failure. Businesses couldn't afford to pay staff and not too soon after it started in late October 1929, 25% of Canadians didn't have jobs. This set Canadians in a big search of work, food and money. This was especially hard after a time of riches for many.
