    The Byzantine Empire last for over one thousand years, making it one of the longer lasting Empires of the time. Some people often forget about the Vikings who went east to Russia and further south into the Byzantine Empire. These Vikings were quite oftenly body guars for the Empire. The Emperors respected and admired the fighting skilla and integrity of the Vikings. They got on quite well, trading different items between each other.

    Vikings Interacting With the Wider World
    Vikings interacted with the wider world by trading different items with them. They would quite oftenly trade armour/weapons for food, water, medicine and healing. This helped them keep into touch with what was going on in different places and villages. These interecations shaped the Vikings as people who wee willing to trade items. It also shaped them as helpful people. But only some thought this, as th Vikings did have their many enemies.

    This was about the end of the Viking Age. Most of the Viking culture had faded out by this time and the Vikings were not as poweerful anymore.

    The beginning of the Viking age happened in aprroximately 800 AD. By this time a strong central authority appears to have been established in Jutland, and the Danes were beginning to look beyond on their own territory for trade, land and plunder. In Norway by 800 AD, some 30 small kingdoms existed in Norway. Viking society was organised? At the start of the Viking age, the society was made up of numbers of tribes. All of the tribes were ruled by Konugr the king.

    The Viking Expansion happned around this time period. Some of the causes for the Viking Expansion were: Significant and rapid rise in population, increase of warfare and Viking culture. There was a lot more ships being built, making the Viking Expansion possible.

    The Christian Monks were very simple people who live calm and religious lives. Well that was until one day when one of the monks saw Viking ships in the horizon. As the ships got closer the monks started to get worried. The Vikings were said to have raided the Monks churches many times and looted from them as well. They had also killed many Christian monks in the process. So you could say that the monks and the Vikings had a bad relationship and had a lot of hatrid for eachother.

    Some of the most influential Viking leaders were Erik the Red and Leif Erikson.Erik the Red - was a Norwegian born and raised explorer, he was also a casual murderer. After his banishment from Iceland for murder, he wanted to make a settlement without his enemies . He reached Greenland with 14 ships and started his settlement. Leif Erikson - This explorer was actually the son of Erik the Red. Leif went on a voyage to prove that the claims of Bjarni Herjulfsson were true.

    Viking Raids, First Phase
    The earliest documented raids by the Vikings were in 793 AD. There were three different phases of the raids. The first phase attacks were from 790 - 840. The Vikings used shallow draught longships which were good for suprise attacks. The fleets were small, making it easy for quick "hit and run" attacks. The attacks were usually isolated in small bands. These attacks began along the coastal cities of England and France and continued down the river villages.

    The second phase of raids lasted from 841 - 875, the raids increased in size, number, intensity and speed. The fleet ships increased in number from 3 to 350. The Vikings arrived unexpectedly, by plundering, burning, killing or enslaving the inhabitants and then leaving the conquered lands. The second fleet managed to reach North Africa, France and Spain. The Vikings formed the "Great Army" that consisted of thousands of individuals.

    The third phase of the Viking raids lasted from 876 - 911, the Vikings , along with their Great Army, continued to plunder on both sides of the Channel and began to colonize England and France. They also pernamently settled in lands they had raided such as Ireland, Iceland and areas in Russia.

    Like most medieval people , the Vikings had a pecking order. At the bottom was the thralls and slaves. Thrall basically means an unfree servant or better known as a slave. Thralls according to the Viking belief, were the first class of mankind created by the god Heimdall as recorded in the 10th century. Vikings didn't really respect the thralls. They enjoyed having them around to use them and make them do all the things they didn't want to. Such as: carrying heavy objects and collecting water

    The Viking Age

    The Viking age lasted from approximately 800 AD to 1050 AD. Scandinavian Vikings explored Europe by its oceans and rivers for trade and conquest. The Vikings also managed to reach Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland and Anatolia.
