The United State's History of the Two-Party System

  • Democratic-Republican Party Created

Jefferson created this party to give the common man more voice in the ways of a constitutional government. He wanted the citizens to be able to be apart of the decisions that made their daily lives possible and for the wealthy to not be in total control.
  • Federalist Party Created

The Federalist Party was created in response to the opposition of Jefferson's Democratic-Republican party. They favored the wealthy and well-born citizens who wanted a strong central government over a strong state government, causing tax increases, commercial interest, and financial manufacturing.
  • Anti-Federalist Party Created

The Anti-Federalist Party was created under Jefferson's idea that there should be a strong state government. He favored sympathy to the common man, causing a belief in a strict constructionist view of the constitution. This made it clear that the Anti-Federalists, or the Democratic-Republicans, wanted the common man to be taken care of, with no tax increase.
  • Jacksonian Democrats Come to Power

Before the mid 1820's, the Democratic-Republicans were unopposed in government. When the election of Andrew Jackson came around, the Democratic-Republicans began to realize a split in power and disjointed the party into two sides: Democrats and Republicans.
  • Lincoln Republicans

During the Civil War, Democrats were shattered. This left the Republicans to run in power for the next 75 years, until the Great Depression. This coursed fear into the Democrats who feared the increase of African American rights, causing the Democrats to rule thew South for the next 100 years.
  • Roosevelt Democrats

The Great Depression left the need for political change in America. When Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected for president, his Democratic position caused a rift in Governmental Leadership. His party consisted of southerners, small farmers, organized labor, and big city political organizations. Social welfare was enforced through economic programs.
  • Period: to

    Modern Republicans

In the early 21st century, the Republican party became extremely conservative, adhering strongly to past tradition. Taxation was believed to stay the same while military spending was meant to increase greatly, for the well-being of the nation. A major issue was abortion, during this beginning to now, and they believed it should be illegal, constituting murder in their eyes. Justice was meant to always rule supreme, giving the extension of individual rights to the citizens of America.
  • Period: to

    Modern Democrats

Since the early 21st century kicked off, Democrats have grown to be highly liberal, open to change. They favor the minimum wage, progressive taxation, a decrease in military spending, the legality of abortion for the good of the woman's individual rights to her body, and the idea that citizens are socially responsible for their community.
