    Camillo di Cavour became prime minister of Sardinia. He used national alliances to acheive his goal of uniting the rest of Italy to Sardinia.

    Sardinia fought with the british and France in the crimean war. This led to a friendship with france, and Cavour joined Napoleon III in an attack on Austria. An outcome of this was that Lambardy and Sardina were united. Also most of the rest of northern Italy joined the union of italian states.

    The fiery rebublican Giuseppe Garibaldi led an invasion of his followers, the red shirts, into Sicily to join an uprising. With help from Cavour, Garibaldi liberated both Sicily and Naples.

    Cavour held an election throughout the states of Southern Italy to show whether the people were ready to join the northren states and Sardinia as a unified nation.

    France declared war on Prussia, occupying French troops left Rome. This made the pope unprotected and immediantely the Italian army marched in to complete the unification process.
