Great Britain cuts off most funding for Middle East
Great Britain was forced to reduce a large portion of their funding for not only Greece and Turkey, but also many other parts of the world. Because of their need for money to recover from the recently ended war, the British government chose to solely focus on domestic issues and pull back assistance from Greece and many other worldwide countries in their time of need.

    Greece Cries for Help
After the funding cut starting on March 31, Greece reached out to the United States as a last resort because they were the one of the only financially stable democratic countries in the world. Turning away from helping Greece would be viewed in a bad favor for America, simply because everyone knew the global power that America held.

    Turkey's Plea for Help
In addition to Britain stopping to fund Greece, they also ceased funding for Turkey. Which then put America in a hard place, because if they help Greece, then they must also help Turkey. To help one and deny the other, would be wrong and unjust.

    Truman Takes Action
After receiving these pleas of help from Turkey and Greece, Truman takes the matter directly to Congress to ask for permission to begin funding in the Middle East. He believes that without the help of the United States, the Middle East will fall into ruin under the rule of communism. To prevent this, Truman wanted to go a step further and provide workers and military aid.

  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was the plan to help countries in Europe, because the cost of doing so would be great. They knew this would cost money, life, and the sweat of their brow to rebuild a country. Many people saw this as a mistake, as they saw it as helping the enemy they just fought. This plan was enacted to stop the chaos of reconstruction.

The Fight Against the Marshall Plan and the Truman Doctrine
This wasn't so much an event, as it was an overall feeling of dissatisfaction with providing financial aid to areas where America recently fought. This would anger America's citizens as well as veterans and create distrust within the government.
