A petition was sent from 13 northern Maori chiefs to King William IV, which asked for protection from a French ship in the Bay of Island.

James Busby was appionted as the official ' British Resident '.

The Declaration of Independence

1835

The Declaration of Independence was created by James Busby. This was done without the permission of the Bristish gorverment. The document stated that all soveriegn power was with the chief and tribes.

William Hobsons

1839

William Hobson was appionted as a consul. He was told to work with the Maori chiefs to gain sovereignty over NZ.

Prohibited Land

Jan 20, 1840

William Hobson prohibided land purchases from the Maori.

Draft Version

Feb 5, 1840

A draft version of the treaty of the Waitangi was discussed with 500 Maori and 200 Pakeha. The Maori were suspicious but Tamati Waka Nene pursuaded them to sign the treaty.

Willian Hobsons announced British sovereignty over all of NZ.

500 chiefs sign the Treaty

By september, 500 chiefs had signed a Maori version of the Treaty of Waitangi.
