Exposition
Happyface moves into a new town named Crest Hills. He used to have trouble making friends, but when he moves in he meets a girl named Gretchen. While Happyface has a group of friends named the Moons, he already has an enemy named Trever. -
Direct Characterization
"I was jealous of just looking at them" (Emond 82). It states Happyface was jealous. -
Rising Action
Gretchen and Happyface go to the winter dance together but Trevor tries to ruin things and tries to seperate Gretchen and Happyface from being near eachother and succesfully does it. -
Indirect Characterization
"Gretchen yawned and had no expression on her face" (Emond 217). You can infer that Gretchen is bored and tedious. -
Direct Characterization
"I'm devastated" (Emond 238). Happyface was sorrowful when he found out that Gretchen and Trevor hung out. -
Rising Action
When Gretchen and Happyface stop being friends:
Gretchen emails Happyface that he is dishonest and a bad friend to be with because Happyface becomes doubtful that Gretchen is telling the truth when she really is. -
Indirect Characterization
"I met their gaze and smiled" (Emond 262). This shows that Happyface is happy. -
Rising Action
Trevor and Happyface get into a fight over Gretchen and Trevor punches Happyface's teeth out and Happyface uses verbal bullying to hurt Trevor in the inside. -
Falling Action
Gretchen and Happyface become friends again and start fresh. -
Climax (turning point)
At the play, Trevor apologizes to Happyface for everything he has done. Happyface forgives him and they both made an agreement to forgive each other and to become friends. They both wanted to start all over. -
Falling Action
Trevor and Happyface email each other a lot and hang out all the time.
