The worst drought had come in a lifetime at the time in the 1970's. People were not allowed to serve water had restaurants and pools started to dry up, making it the perfect place for skaters to learn new tricks. At the time, this was called "Pool serving." But became inspiration to create half pipes later on. Doing this kind of thing was dangerous. You could get caught and be arrested. That was where the adrenaline kicked in.

Surfing really started to take off in California. When people weren't surfing, they were skateboarding. Skating and surfing were the popular sports in the 1950's - present.

The half-pipe was created five years after people used pools as their main source of creating tricks. People created half-pipes so they didn't have to get caught by the cops for having fun.

Alan Gelfand, a young skateboarder at the time, invented the "Ollie" which is a skate trick where the skateboarder jumps into the air without any hands. It is a very useful and well-known trick.

Surfing is quite popular still in California and many other places. Boards went from long flimsy pieces of wood to sturdy plastic wood boards. Surfing went from a sacred tradition preformed by the Island people of Tahiti Hawaii to a million dollar sport.

From 2006 - present, skateboarding is more of a thing for teens and young adults. Teens still skate for fun. We now buy skateboards and longboards to look "cool" with our style choice and to just stroll around town. There are skate-shops all around the world for skater clothing and boards. In 2020, skateboarding will be featured in the Summer Olympics!
