    Ned's Parents
    Ned’s parents were Red Kelly and Ellen Kelly. His father was a freed Irish convict. Red had served seven years in Van Dieman’s Land in Tasmania. He stole two pigs. Ned’s mother was Irish as well and came to Australia when she was nine years old.

    Ned Kelly was born in 1854. The exact date is unknown. He was born in the bush near Melbourne to a poor family. Red Kelly, who was Ned’s father, earned only a small amount of money on the goldfields. After Red died they didn’t have anyone to provide the family with money so, Ned had to work. They were poor and couldn’t waste anything.

    In 1857 Red Kelly scored some work at the goldfield. He owned enough money to buy 41 acres of land. Later he lost this money spending it on food and drink. He sold the land for only half of the original price and they became poor. This all happened when Ned was 3 and things didn’t improve. They weren’t happy at all.Kirra

    In 1864 Ned left school at the age of 10. He was only at school for about two years. The reason why he left was because his father died, so he had to help out withy the farm.
    He must have been fairly clever as he learned a lot in two short years.

    Ned was 12 years old when his father Red Kelly died. Ned Kelly dropped out of school when he was 12 years old to work on their family farm. It was the end of his education. After Red Kelly died, the family struggled to keep the farm productive. They were very poor. AhAhA

    In 1868 Ned became a bushranger’s apprentice to Harry Powers. Ned would help Harry by committing Highway robbery, Ned only stayed with Harry for a couple of months because of his bad temper, so he went home. The troopers came the next day to arrest him, but Ned only stayed in jail for a few weeks.

    In 1869 Ned got in trouble with the police for a fight between two hawkers that didn’t involve him to start with. Hawkers are people who travelled around the country side selling goods to farmers. Ned tried to convince the police that he was innocent but he was still charged with violent assault. His sentence was to pay a fine of 10 pounds plus an additional sum of 60 pounds as a bond that he would not get into trouble again. Ned’s family couldn’t pay 10 pounds of the fine so he had to serve six

    The First Jail Sentence
    Two Hawkers were having an ugly fistfight when Ned came along. Ned became involved, trying to stop it but there are some things you just can’t stop. Hawkers are people who wander around the countryside selling goods to farmers.
    First, the hawkers exchanged insults, which soon turned into a fully fledged fistfight. The fight had nothing to do with poor Ned, but he was drawn into it anyway. Ned was innocent, but was charged with violent assault and an even WORSE reputation. Caitlyn

    Ned was riding a beautiful, chestnut mare called Lady. He pulled aside and talked to James Gloster. He said, “That’s a nice piece of horse flesh you’ve got there.” Ned replied, “She’s not mine.” He continued riding back to the motel. When he was just arriving he saw that the police were waiting outside the motel. Constable Fitzpatrick came over and asked Ned to come to the station and sign some papers. Ned smiled, suddenly Fitzpatrick grabs him and says, “You’re under arrest!”

    Ned's Second Jail Sentence
    In August 1871 Ned Kelly was sentenced to three years in jail for horse theft although the last owner had stolen it from its’ previous owner. Ned did not know this, but was still sentenced to three gruelling years in jail. The horse’s previous owner was sentenced to eighteen months in jail. Ned was in solitary confinement for three months of his three year sentence. In February 1874 Ned was released, he was just sixteen when he was sentenced to jail and was released when he was nineteen.

    Ned was sentenced to three years in jail and was not allowed to speak to anyone. The people in the prisons were only allowed outside for one hour per day. They wore hoods that covered their faces except for tiny eyeholes. He also did hard labour by cutting blocks of bluestone with a hammer and chisel and also helped build sea walls around Port Phillip Bay. six months were taken off his sentence for good behaviour. He arrived home when he was 19 to a completely different lifestyle. See 2nd sheet

    In 1877, Ned gave up, and quit his job. He quit the sawmill company that he worked at. He started what he called “Wholesale and retail horse and cattle dealing” which was actually stealing horses, over branding them, and selling them illegally. Dan, his brother, helped him along the way, as well as his stepfather (George King), some of his cousins and two of his friends, Aaron Sherritt and Joe Byrne also helped.     Ned Kelly’s mother went to jail in May 1878.
    Ned stayed close to the town to hear news and be provided with food by the gang’s friends. The gang set up in a near abandoned hut; they grew grains and crops to make alcoholic drinks. They sold the alcohol illegally. When they made enough money to bail Ned and Dan’s mother, Ellen Kelly, out of jail, they gave it to their friends that have been providing the gang with food.

    Two months later someone paid to bail Ned’s mum out of jail. Bad news followed as all three were found guilty for a trail which judge Redmond Barry decided. Mrs Kelly got three years of hard labour. Putting Mrs Kelly in hard labour just swayed her sons of bias with the system. Ned and Dan were still wanted. A friend of Dan’s joined them his name was Steve Hart. The Kelly brothers had gone into hiding. Joe Byrne who had worked by their father’s side also joined and so the Kelly gang was born.

    The Kelly Gang had been hiding out in the Wombat Ranges for 6 months. They were keeping busy panning for gold and distilling whiskey to raise money to free their mother. They had been practising their shooting. heeaf A group of four troopers set up a camp on the banks of Stringy Creek, only two kilometres from where the Kelly’s hideout was. The Kelly Gang heard gunfire ringing out around them. The gang then set out to find the troopers, before the troopers found them. Kimalyse

    After 6 months in the woods, it wasn’t hard to track down the search party. Gunshots firing, the Kelly gang following, it was a piece of cake. Soon enough they were there, one cooking dinner and the other tending a horse. The Kelly gang jumped out and the police ran for cover. Ned pulled out his revolver and shot Lonigan dead.
