Pemulwuy, an Aboriginal warrior, started to oppose the invasion of European settlers onto his people's ancestral grounds two years after the First Fleet arrived. Despite suffering a terrible injury in 1797, he evaded capture until he was killed by gunfire in 1802. Sir Joseph Banks received Pemulwuy's severed head as part of his collection.
