  • The Civil Rights Bill of 1964

    The Civil Rights Bill of 1964 (proposed by President Kennedy) was signed into law by President Lyndon Baines Johnson.
    The bill gave the justice department additional powers in public accomodations. Including the: segregation of public schools, and in bringing suit against racial discrimination. It allowed the government to cut off federal funding to any other level of government that was discriminatory.
  • March from Selma to Montomery 1

    Peaceful participants in a march sceduled to show the desire of African-American citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote were attacked by State troopers and county Possemen. The unarmed marchers were attacked with Billy Clubs and Tear Gas.
    Law enforcements beat Amelia Boynton unconcious.

    March from Selma to Montomery 2
    A second march took place led by Martin Luther King, Bevel, and Nash. That evening, three white Unitarian Universalist ministers in Selma for the march were attacked on the street and beaten with clubs by four KKK members. The worst injured was James Reeb from Boston, who later died.

    Signed into law by President Lyndon Baines Johnson.
    The bill empowered federal authorites to take over the voter-registration process in juristictions where discrimination existed and to suspend literacy requirements.
