    The time setting in the novel "The Scarlet Letter" is taken in Massachusetts Bay Colony, in the town of Boston during the Puritan settlement. The first character to be introduced is Hester Prynne as she stands on the scaffold with the scarlet letter 'A' on her chest. The letter symbolizes for adultery and Hester must wear it in shame for not confessing who her lover was.
  • Conflict

    Conflict
    Hester's husband, Roger Chillingworth was present at the scene. Being curious and furious at the same time, Chillingworth was vengeful for what his wife had done for the last two years of living in America without him. Hester was also bearing a child in her arms serving as the solid evidence for her adultery.
  • Rising Action

    Rising Action
    Arthur Dimmesdale silently watches Hester standing before the crowd and demands who her partner was in the crme. However, Dimmesdale himself was the other person to commit the crime. His actions and guilt soon affected his health and Chillingworth, disguising as a doctor grows suspicious of the Reverend and seeks to find more about him as well as his wife's secret.
  • Turning Point

    Turning Point
    The turning point is when Hester and Arthur meet each other, whether it was in town or at the forest. Arthur, Hester, and Pearl (who is around three), stood together on the scaffold one late evening as if they were united and were ready to stand with each other the next day.
  • Falling Action

    Falling Action
    After many conflicting feelings about telling the truth to the towns people, Arthur soon finds his courage to make a speech and stand with both hester and Pearl. Hiding in plain site for seven years, the minister finally commits his sin.
  • Resolution

    Resolution
    Soon after publicy announcing his long secret, Arthur dies on the scaffold with Hester and Pearl by his side. After the death of both Arthur and Roger, Hester and Pearl disappeared. Years had passed and Hester returns to Boston to live a life there again, while Pearl grew up and got married, possibly starting a family of her own. Hester then dies in the town that had people criticising about the scarlet letter on her chest and is buried next to Arthur.
