    The Poll Tax

  • Law was passed to introduce the new tax in scotland on 1 April 1989.

  • APTUs were set up in Maryhill, Glasgow.

  • The Poll Tax Law started in Scotland.

  • ABAPTF was set up. (All-Britain Anti Poll Tax Federation)

  • 15% of scots were not paying the tax.

  • 1,000 APTUs set up across England & Wales.

  • Battle of Trafalgar Square.

  • The tax law was then introduced to the whole of Britain.(except Northern Ireland.)

  • In Scotland, that nearly 1 million people had not paid a penny to the new tax.

  • The tax become law in England.

  • There were 14 million non-payers.

    97,000 in the London borough of Haringley alone.
  • Margaret Thatcher is now longer Prime Minister.

  • In England, non payment averaged 18% in rural areas, 27% in most urban areas & 34% in inner London.

  • In Scotland, non-payment was nearly 35%.

  • Over 18 million people were refusing to pay the poll tax.

  • New Prime Minister ,John Major, announced in April that it would be replaced by a new council tax, however this would not start until Aoril 1993, and The Poll tax would carry on til then.

  • Poll tax ended. it was estimated £2.5 billion of the tax was still unpaid.

  • the Council tax was introduced.
