Emily Murphy's first day as a Magistrate.
On her first day as magistrate, a male lawyer challenged her appointment.
He claimed that only a "qualified person" could sit on the bench.
This event is important, because at that time, British North American act only considered men as persons; women were not even mentioned.
I choose this image of Emily Murphy working in court, because i want show how at the time where the laws of men were more important, Emily fought for the rights and voice of women in an era where their words were worthless. -
Formation of the Famous Five
By 1927,Emily teamed up with Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby and Henrietta Muir Edwards.
They became the Alberta Five and they fought Person Case in the courts.
This even is important because this five women empower the female society to courageously lead change that contributes to a world without boundaries for women.
I choose this image because shows the monument of this five women that change the laws. They fought for shows to an a entire country, how WOMEN ARE PERSONS TOO. -
Supreme Court ruling on the Persons Case
The Supreme Court ruled that women were not “persons” under Section 24 of the BNA Act.
This was supported by the fact that “persons” would have included only men, women 'cant hold political office'.
This event closed the doors to woman. They didn't consider them as 'people' and believe that women were incapable of being in a job that did not involve men.
I choose the picture of the place where the ruling to not recognize women was made, but that did not prevent these five women fight for rights. -
British Privy Council ruling on the Person’s Case
The Privy Council reversed the decision of the Supreme Court on 18 October 1929.
It concluded that the word ‘persons’ in sec.24 does include women, and that women are eligible to be summoned to and become members of the Senate.
This event opened many doors for women, and after much struggle it recognized them as members of society and as part of the political community.
I choose this image because it shows us,how these five women never gave up,they make a new path and opportunities for women. -
Carine Wilsons’ appointment to the Senate
Wilson was the first woman appointed to the Senate of Canada,on the advice of Prime Minister William Mackenzie King.
Wilson’s appointment was made possible by the Persons Case, therefore eligible to serve in the Senate.
This event is important because Carine Wilson takes the leading in the political society and among the women speaks English and French.
I choose this image of Carine Wilson,a person who worked to make progressive changes and give more rights and independence to women in Canada.
