Ponyboy Curtis is a 14 year old greaser living with his two older brothers and he hangs around with his other friends who are greasers. Pony was at the movies, leaving, until he was beaten up by the jock, Socs. Darry (Pony's older brother) believes that he needs to "use his head" more. Pony along with his best friend Johnny go to the movies with Dally and meet Cherry and Marcia there. That night, Ponty stayed out late with Johnny and they fell asleep in the parking lot and Darry was mad at him. -

Pony and Johnny went to the park late that night since Darry hit Pony. When they get there, the Socs come, drunk, and they beat up Johnny and tried to kill Pony. So Johnny stabbed a Soc and they all ran off. They were both terrified so they went to see Dally and he told them a plan to run away for a while from the cops. So they went to a church and stayed there a while and they disguised themselves. Soon, Dally found the both of them and explained that they have "a spy" which was Cherry. -

When Dally finds Johnny and Ponyboy, they go to see that the church they were hiding at was on fire. So Pony and Johnny go inside the church to save all of the little kids who went in there. Johnny was badly injured and so was Dally when he went into the church to save him. They were all taken to the hospital and Pony was picked up by his two older brothers and was back home. Soon, Pony and Two-Bit (a greaser) go to the gas station and Pony talks to one of the Socs realizing he's not a bad guy. -

Ponyboy finds out that the police are charging Johnny with man-slaughter since he killed a Soc. Since there has been so much madness with Socs and the Greasers, they decide to plan a fight. But Johnny and Dally can't fight since they are still in the hospital. But that doesn't stop Dally since he goes anyways. In the end, the Greasers end up winning the fight and when Dally and Pony go to the hospital, Johnny had died since he couldn't recover from the fire, and Dally goes crazy. -

When Dally leaves the hospital, he just goes mad and robs a gas station since Johnny dies. The police were after Dally that night and when the catch him, they shoot him since they thought he had a real gun, but Pony believes that Dally did want to die. Darry and Sodapop (Pony's older brothers) go to court to claim custody of Ponyboy and they do get it! Later, Pony found a letter from Johnny that he will keep to remember him after his death since Johnny was his best friend.
