    Sodapop is a very kind person. Sodapop cares and loves Ponyboy very much. Sodapop always tried to understand and protect Ponyboy so that Ponyboy thought he loves Soda more than he have ever loved anyone, even his Mom and Dad. After his parents dead, Darry grew up so fast. He became a tough and real man after his parents died. He works so long and hard to support their family. Ponyboy thought that Darry was so strict with him. He was hard and firm and rarely grins at all.

    Bob, is one of the Socs member. He is tough and unfriendly. It is because that his parents spoiled him rotten. He wantsed his parents to give hime much love and care.

    Ponyboy gets jumped walking home from movies. As he walked, he noticed a red Corvair trailing him. He quickened his pace as he remembers how badly the Socs beat Johnny. Then Socs began to beat up Ponyboy. The other members of Greasers appeared and chased away the Socs. They cheered Ponyboy up and protected him.

Ponyboy is the main character and the narrator in this novel. He enjoyed movies and books and like watching them alone. He is very clever. He has two elder brothers called Sodapop and Darry.

    Dally, Dallas Winston, the real character of the gang. He was the toughest one in Greaser, and he was as wild as the boys in the downtown outfits. Dally's favorite person in Greaser was Johnny. Johnny Cade was 16. He had a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes. He was the gang’s pet, everyone’s kid brother. His parents never cared about him. His father was always beating him up. If it hadn’t been for the gang, Johnny would never have known what love and affection are.

Ponyboy got jumped was not because of his fool, he was clever, but he just didn’t use his mind, it was also why Darry would be angry with him.

    During this conversation, they talked about something that separated Greasers and Socs. Ponyboy thought it was money that separated Socs and Greasers; however, Cherry said that it was not just money. The Greasers had a different set of values. The Greasers were more emotional, but the Socs were sophisticated, and nothing was for real with them. Socs were always behind a wall of aloofness, careful not to let their real selves show through.

    During this discussion, Ponyboy and Cherry found they had a surprising amount in common. They also had understood what separated Greasers and Socs. Socs always pretended to be cool, or they would not be accepted by the whole gang. It is necessary for Ponyboy to understand the real world and to see things in just.     Ponyboy walked home and found that Darry was angry with him for staying out so late. During the ensuing argument, Darry beat Ponyboy. No one in Ponyboy’s family had ever hit him before, and Ponyboy rushed out of the house in a rage. He felt sure now that Darry does not like him.

    Darry really wanted to protect and care Ponyboy. However, Ponyboy was always mindless which made Darry very mad. It was the second time in the book that Darry was annoyed by Ponyboy. Darry showed his love to Ponyboy again through this thing. It is because of this thing that Darry realize that he was too strict with Ponyboy. Darry felt very sorry to Ponyboy. This part of book also connected with the following part, which Ponyboy got hurt after the fire. So when Darry see Ponyboy again, he cried.

    Johnny and Ponyboy went the park at two-thirty in the early morning. Socs were looking for Johnny and Ponyboy because they thought that Ponyboy and Johnny picked up their girls. Bob insulted the Greasers and then shoved Ponyboy’s head into the fountain. Johnny stabbed Bob to his death, and other Socs ran away.

    This event had a significant impact on the following contradictions between Ponyboy and Darry, although some of them are misunderstanding. It’s the fuse of the Tinderbox --- the emotion conflict between those two.

    This event is the main clue of the whole story. It aroused the heat conflicts between Greasers and Socs. It is because that Johnny kill Bob, they must escape from there, and hide from police. And other Socs would revenge for Bob. That is part of the reason cause the rumble.
  • Ponyboy and Johnny head to Windrixville to hide in a church from the police.

    After Johnny killed Bob, they went to the Buck Merril’s place. They found Dally, and asked him for some help. Dally told them to hide from d the police in an old abandoned church on top of Jay Mountain. This church is at Windrixville. They got into the boxcar of the train and went to the church. Johnny bought food for one week for their life in Jay Mountain. He also bought the book “Gone with the wind”.

    This part of book can be a transitional part of the book. It connected the story of the following part. From this part, we can also see that how Dally loved Johnny. He wanted to protect him. It also can show the friendship between the members of the whole gang. This parts also provided preparation and groundwork of the story would happened next. It can make a comparison of the importance of Johnny in the gang. It also can make a contrast of Ponyboy changing his attitude about fighting.

    One day morning, Johnny and Ponyboy got bed early, and were waiting for the dawn’s coming. Then they saw the sunrise. It was pretty indeed. It let Ponyboy memorized a poem written by Robert Frost --- Nothing gold can stay.

    The meaning of this poem was everything was changing all the time. As the time passed by, things changed rapidly. Nothing was eternal for anyone. As an old saying, we never know what god has in store for us. Things could be fine, also could be bad. For Ponyboy, the only thing he could do was prepare for the unknown, and cherish his present.

  • Cutting hair of Ponyboy

    Johnny asked Ponyboy to cut his hair so that they did not fit the pictures in paper. Then they could not easy to be found by others after cutting their hair. However Pohnny was unwilling to do that because he thought that was his pride. After a long argument, Ponyboy allowed Johnny to cut his hair but not too short.
  • The Importance

    Ponyboy treat his hair as his pride. It was beautiful, long and silky, like Sodapop’s. For Ponyboy, his hair also was his trademark --- the one thing stood for Greaser and he was proud of, the simple of Greaser. Maybe they couldn’t have corvairs or madras shirts, but they could have hair. So for Ponyboy, it was really a big decision to has a haircut.
  • The fire in the church

    When dally sent Ponyboy and Johnny back to the church, they found the church gor in fire and there were still children in it. Johnny and Ponyboy went in the church to save those children. Dally tried to call them back, but he failed. Thus, Dally went to the church, too. Eventually they saved the children successfully, but Johnny got serious hurt. Ponyboy and Johnny were picked up to hospital by ambulances.

    This event showed how kind Johnny and Ponyboy were. They were perceptual and brave. They couldn't just stand there and watch the fire. They were emotional. They had their feelings. It was the big difference between Greaser and Socs. Dally didn't want them get hurt. He wanted them to be their own protection, instead of helping others without considering themselves.

    From this part of the book, we could know how deep Darry loved Ponyboy. Darry was not good at showing his emotion and love. He cried when he knew Ponyboy was in trouble. In my opinion, Darry’s love was tough but warm. He was strict to Ponyboy and always set rules for Ponyboy. Ponyboy thought that Dally didn’t love him at all. Because of Darry’s tears, Ponyboy realized that Darry loved him very much and he was just not good at show his feelings to others. Thus, Ponyboy changed the attitude to him

    Randy came to see Ponyboy and said he wanted to talk with Ponyboy. They talked about Ponyboy and Johnny’s action to save the children. When Randy said Socs would not do the same thing and he had never thought that Greasers can do such a thing. Ponyboy used to think that the Socs had everything and they could do anything they want.

    After Ponyboy returned from the church, Darry and Sodapop came to see Ponyboy. Darry apologize to Ponyboy about the thing that he hit Ponyboy. He cried when he knew Ponyboy’s situation in the mountain. He was very nervous about Ponyboy. He felt painful about that Ponyboy hurt by the fire. This is strange and unusual. Darry was always a tough and strong guy. He never showed his weakness in front of others. He didn’t cry even when his parents died.

    Randy told Ponyboy how great Bob was. Randy told him that Bob was not bad as Ponyboy thought. Bob was a little of unruly because that his parents spoiled him. He did everything just try to let his parents pay more attention on him. He wanted his parents treated him in a right way.

    From this conversation, we could know that Ponyboy mentioned the individual. Ponyboy said this is not about which group you are in, it’s individual. Maybe some Socs member would help to quench the fire, when they faced such a situation. Actually in my point of view, Socs and Greasers were both normal people.

    Randy’s words changed a little of Ponyboy’s thought about Greasers and Socs. This sense is one of the most important points in the story. The word “individual” first directly appeared in this book. It is another theme of this book------individualism.
  • The rumble between Greasers and Socs

    When the rumble began, there were twenty-two people in Socs and only twenty people in Greasers. In that process, Ponyboy got badly hurt because he had a bad cold before the fight .Others hurt a little. This tough rumble ended. Finally, they beat the Socs and won the fight. They celebrated their victory.
  • The importance of the rumble

    This victory of rumble meant a lot to the Greasers. They would not afraid of the Socs anymore. They would not bully by the Socs anymore. The rumble in this book is the most important part. It led the whole story to the climax. It also reminded us the story was coming into an end. This rumble also let me know that nobody could always be the winner. We should control ourselves and to be kind to others.
  • Johnny died in the hospital

    After the big rumble, Johnny was dying because the hurt in the fire. Every Greaser did not want him die. It is because that they loved him. He was a part of this big family which named Greaser. Especially for Ponyboy, he could not accept the fact about Johnny’s death. And he would never forget Johnny’s note --- stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold...

    As Ponyboy once said to Johnny,”Nothing gold can stay”, Johnny’s note hadsome deep meaning to Ponyboy. Johnny wanted Ponyboy to be eternal and to keep his original heart --- a warm, helpful and kind heart. Johnny wanted Ponyboy to be emotional instead of being cool. It also reflected Johnny’s attitude. If he could go back to the day when the church was on fire, he would choose to save children again, Although it was really dangerous for him

    Johnny’s death had a large impact on what would happen in the future. It especially affected Ponyboy which made Ponyboy felt sorrow for a long time.
  • Dally's death

    Ponyboy told everyone about this horrible news that Johnny died when he was coming back home. For a while, Darry received a telephone called from Dally that he just robbed a grocery store and the cops are chasing after him. Then they went to find Dally. Dally came in from the opposite as fast as he could. When the police came, Dally was carrying a heater to help a bluff. Finally, the police used the gun to shoot Dally. Dally died on the same day Johnny died.

    Randy dropped off from his school to see Ponyboy the day before they saw the judge next day. Randy talked about Bob’s death, Randy told him it was not his fault. He also said that Johnny could be blame for all with punishment. It drove Ponyboy crazy. At that time, Ponyboy changed his attitude. Ponyboy was bewildered, and kept saying Bob was killed by himself and Johnny was not dead. Darry came in, finished this unhappy conversation.

    Ponyboy smoke cigarette to reduce the pain he suffered from Johnny’ death. He was really hurt inside about Johnny’s death, and he did not want to accept the fact. He said that Darry was a good guardian who made him study and know where he was and who accompany with him all the time. He also knew that Darry kept him out of trouble. According to his chat with Randy, we can see he really cared Darry, too. His attitude to Darry had changed.

    As these, we can also see that Johnny had a good friendship with Ponyboy. He really cared about Johnny so that he could not accept the truth. Ponyboy’s behavior confused us and express how sorrowful he was after Johnny’s death.

    When Ponyboy was coming back home, he noticed that something wrong about Soda. Soda was very quiet and unusual. Ponyboy talked with Darry as usual. Ponyboy wanted to get a job after getting out of school, but Darry disagreed about that. When Ponyboy asked Sodapop for help, Sodapop changed his attitude. This time he only said a few words. He didn’t protect Ponyboy. Then he went outside. After picking up the envelope Sodapop dropped, they finally found out that Sandy left Sod.
  • Quarrel between Ponyboy and his brothers(2)

    They chased Sodapop and caught him. Sodapop said what he feels when he heard that the gang fought. He lacked likes the middleman and seemed to be split in half. Then they suddenly realized Sodapop’s felling. He talked about Ponyboy and Darry’s thought and their situation and they promised not to fight any more. At last, Darry and Ponyboy decided never to have each of them hurt again. Then they went home together.

    I think that this quarrel really led the whole story to the end. They all went to the court and stated about Bob’s death. The result was that they would not be divided and sent to other places. Everything about the murder of Bob had ended. All of them would not be disturbed by this accident. He can returned to his normal life and have a happy life with Sodapop and Darry.

    This quarrel did not like an argument. Ponyboy, Sodapop and Darry became closer from this event. The misunderstanding between Ponyboy and Darry disappeared. The solved conflict made Sodapop’s bad emotion gone.This part also showed the love and value of these three brothers.On the other hand, Soda was soorowful about Sandy, which can show that as the Greasers' gang, they cannot be supported approval from the society.They cannot be shown equal respect as Socs.
  • Ponyboy found the letter Johnny left.

    Ponyboy did not want to do the homework, and decided to finish the book that Johnny left for him. When he began to read it, he found a piece of paper from it. Johnny wanted to tell Dally that saving children in fire worth it and reminded Ponyboy to stay gold. He hoped Dally can try for what he really wants and there is really something good in the world.

    Using a letter which Johnny left to be an ending. It was also built a connection of preceding part of the text. It also implied that the life in the future would be brilliant. The future would be filled with happiness with Johnny’s eventual hope.
