    At chapter 1, Ponyboy is walking home one afternoon after watching a Paul Newman film, and his mind starts to wander. He thinks about how he wants Paul Newman’s good looks, though he likes his own greaser look. He also thinks that, although he likes to watch movies alone, he wishes he had company for the walk home. And he talks about his family; he has two brothers Sodap and Darry. And he also tells us the relationship between the Socs and greasers.

    As he walks, he notices a person trailing him. He quickens his pace as he remembers how badly the Socs beat his friend Johnny Cade. The man pulls up beside Ponyboy and five Socs climb out and surround him. One of them asks, “Need a haircut, greaser?” and pulls out a blade. The Socs begin to beat up Ponyboy, who screams for help.

    This is the first time Ponyboy he really meets the Socs and suffers something not good,Ponyoby knows there is a gap between the poor greaesers and rich Socs, the two gangs have the severe conflicts. And Ponyboy doesn’t want to take part in this “war”, but he still is a greaser whatever how he to escape , and this time means he is really join in the “war” formally. So, I think this is a important point of this novel.

    Ponyboy Curtis,,he is the narrator of the whole story and he is also the main character of this novel. This is the beginning of the whole story; this is the introduction of the novel, so that’s why I think this part is very important.

    This is the first time the two groups have the confrontation, and they almost have a fighting because of girls. Fortunately, the grils prevent the fighting happen.

    Ponyboy and Johnny go with Dally to a theater, and they sit behind Soc girls, Dally begins to talk something dirty and makes the girls feel embarrassed. A girl who has red hair named Sherry turns around and coolly tells Dally to stop but Dally continues to make suggestive remarks. Dally goes to buy cokes, and Ponyboy talks to the red-haired girl, Cherry Valance. Ponyboy and Cherry discover that they have a lot in common.

    She told Ponyboy that because of her hair, so her friends often call her Cherry. Cherry and Ponyboy go to get popcorn,then they argues about theirs different views and Ponyboy doesn’t believe the Cherry.
    Cherry is an important role in the whole story and this is the first Cherry meets Ponyboy. And both them think that greasers or Socs don’t bad like them ever think before because they know each other. And because of Cherry, the story can go on with a dramatic developing.

    After the movie, Two –bit arrives and the three greasers begin to walk with the Soc girls to Two-Bit’s house, so he can drive them home. On the way to Two-Bit’s house, they run into Bob and Randy, who are the girls’ drunken boyfriends. The girls must leave with their boyfriends in order to prevent a fight between the Socs and the greasers.

    Ponyboy points out that the sunset makes the gap closer between the greasers and Socs. He realizes although the two groups have different lifestyles, attitudes, and financial situations, they at least live in the same world, and they are beneath the same sun. Whatever they live where, they still have something in common. Maybe not all the greasers and the Socs are not same, but some of them are same.

    It’s okay… We aren’t in the same class. Just don’t forget that some of us watch the sunset too. Ponyboy said these words to Cherry and they found that they have a lot of things in common. And Ponyboy also realize that even though greasers ang Socs exist the gap but they must have something in common.

    And Bob was killed by Johnny with his switchblade. This is the rising action of the whole story, and Bob's death makes the conflict of two groups get stonger.

    Ponyboy panics, but Johnny remains calm. They decide to find Dally, they think Dally maybe have the able to help them. They find Dally at the house of Buck Merril.He manages to get the boys fifty dollars, a change of clothing for Ponyboy, and a loaded gun. He let two boys hide in an abandoned church.

    Jonny doen't a real killer but is a defender of his friend’s life and a victim of tragic circumstance. His actions are regrettable, but his motivation is noble—he wants to save his friend’s life. The two boys flee, and they make the story have something more.

    Ponyboy and Johnny are walking beside the fountain,and then they see the blue Mustang from earlier night. Five Socs, including Randy and Bob, jump out of the car and approach them. They five Socs are drunk, Ponyboy thinks Ponyboy spits at the Socs. Ponyboy spits at the Socs. A Soc grabs Ponyboy and holds his head under the frigid water of the fountain. Ponyboy feels himself drowning and blacks out. When he has consciousness again.He found thata he is lying on the pavement next to Johnny.

    Ponyboy wakes in the church and finds a note from Johnny saying that he has gone into town to get supplies. When Johnny returns, he brings a week’s supply of baloney and cigarettes, and a paperback copy of Gone with the Wind. Jonny suggests that they cut their hair to disguise themselves, and he bleaches Ponyboy’s hair with knife.

    This is also the rising action part of the whole story and in order to hide themselves , Ponyboy and Jonny cut their hair which is really a symbol to show that they are geasers.

    The boys admire the southern gentlemen in Gone with the Wind, and Johnny points out that they remind him of Dally. Ponyboy disagrees,he prefers the other greasers to Dally. He thinks that Dally was so real that makes him feel frightening.

    Ponyboy feels more comfortable with Soda, Darry, and Two-Bit ,he is more comfortable with fictional heroes than with real people like Dally who have lost their innocence. Ponyboy lkes to run away before this real society, so when Dally-the hero of most greasers appears before him, he feels uncomfortable. Maybe Dally always reminds Ponyboy that where he stays amd who he is, so Ponyboy always wants to conceal .

    Ponyboy recites a Robert Frost poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay.” The poem touches Johnny. Everything is changing at everytime, it will always change until it disappear.Every beautiful, valuable and cherish thing will disappear with time goes by, so Ponyboy was touched by this poem because of his afraid, he is afraid of losing something or something can stay forever.

    Dally comes to check on Ponyboy and Johnny, he shows up a letter to Ponyboy from Sodapop. He tells the boys since Bob’s death, tensions between the greasers and the Socs have escalated. A rumble will take place the next night to settle matters. And Cherry who feels responsible for Bob’s death, aslo regretted for Ponyboy and Jonny ,has been acting as a spy for the greasers.

    Sodap tells Ponyboy that Darry and he just worried about him, they really love Ponyboy, becuase Ponyboy is their brother and their family. And Sodap also says that Darry is really worried about Ponyboy and he also feels regret about slaping Pnyboy's face, he just worried, and afraid that Ponyboy will meets something bad. This point shows us the family love.

    These boys are really kind and warm-hearted. They care care about the life.They killed a person just as a defender but they are really innocent.

    Just as they get the last child through the window, the roof caves in. ohnny pushes Ponyboy out of the window, and then Ponyboy hears Johnny scream. Ponyboy starts to go back in for Johnny, but Dally prevents him.When Ponyboy wakes, he is in an ambulance,The teacher tells him Dally was burned but will be fine and Jonny was struck by a piece of burning timber as it fell, and may have broken his back.

    Dally agrees to drive Ponyboy and Johnny back home. As they leave, they notice that the abandoned church where Ponyboy and Johnny have been staying has caught fire. They discover that a group of schoolchildren has wandered inside. Ponyboy and Johnny rush into the church to sasve the children.

    Ponyboy is making breakfast when Steve and Two-Bit come in with the morning papers. The papers portray Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally as heroes for rescuing the schoolchildren. This point shows us that greasers also do well things although they are poor. And this newspaper can help more people know the truly greasers.

    Randy, comes over to Ponyboy. Randy tells Ponyboy that he is sick of all the fighting and does not plan to go to the rumble that night . Greasers will still be greasers and Socs will still be Socs. Sometimes I think it’s the ones in the middle that are really the lucky stiffs.

    His words speak to an important idea in the novel—the futility of the recurring Soc-greaser violence. By stating that the members of both groups will always remain in their respective groups, he suggests that it would be impossible for a greaser or a Soc to rise above his current status. So, Randy and Ponyboy seems have something in common, too.

    Two-Bit and Ponyboy go to see Johnny and Dally in the hospital. Johnny, weak and pale, whispers that he would like Ponyboy to finish reading Gone with the Wind to him. His mother shows up to visit, and Johnny refuses to see her.
    We couldn’t get along without him. We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang. And for the same reason.

    Johny is really important for this gang ang this gang alos important for Johnny. Johnny looks greasers as his family, this poor boy only 14 years old and he seems lost all the family love from his real family.

    When the rumble ends, Dally and Ponyboy go to the hospital to see Johnny.Ponyboy and Dally find Johnny dying. Johnny moans that fighting is useless, tells Ponyboy to stay gold.

    This is the climax of the whole story .Johnny tells Ponyboy to remain gold, or innocent. Johnny now senses the uselessness of fighting,he knows Ponyboy is better than the average hoodlum, and he wants Ponyboy to hold the golden qualities that set him apart from his friends.

    At the rumble, the greasers defeat the Socs. Dally shows up just in time for the fight, he has escaped from the hospital. The reason why this is important shows that from some ways, the greasers are improve themselves that they don't need afraid the Socs anymore.

    Ponyboy asks that Ponyboy and Darry stop fighting. Finally understanding the value of his family, Ponyboy agrees not to fight with Darry anymore. This is the falling action of the whole story.
