Returning from the Trojan war, Odysseus and his men raided the town of the Cicones—Trojan allies— but the Cicones retaliate by killing 72 of Odysseus' men, and forcing the rest out to sea.

Landing on the coast of the Lotus Eaters, Odysseus sends two men and a runner to check out the natives. When the natives give the crew members lotus flowers, they forget about their quest for home. Odysseus had to go drag the men back and tie them to the bottom of the rowing benches, and they continued on their way.

Odysseus and his crew get caught in a cave with a cyclops. They must trick the cyclops to get out, and they get the cyclops drunk. While it was passed out on the floor, Odysseus and his crew stab the eye of the cyclops with a sharpened spike. When the cyclops opened the cave door again, Odysseus and his men tie themselves underneath the rams of the Cyclops. Odysseus loses many men.

Odysseus and his crew stay for 1 month with the King. As parting gifts, Odysseus recieves a fair west wind that would blow him towards Ithaca and a bag containing the unfavorable stormy winds. Within sight of home, Odysseus takes a nap, and while sleeping the crew opens the bag of winds—thinking its gold and silver—blowing them back to King Aeolus. King Aeolus refuses to help.

With a short tussle with the Laestrygones, fierce cannibals, Odysseus, his ship, and 45 crew members survived the island.

Circe turns the crew in to pigs, only changing them back when —with the help of Hermes— Odysseus defeats Circe and threatens to kill her. Odysseus and his men stay for one year—against their will— and are only set free when she gives them a task to visit the Land of the Dead. 1 of 2 women Odysseus cheats on with his wife.

After seeing ghosts of his family and friends he hears his prophcey from Tiresias. His prophecy warned him not to let his men eat the cattle of Helios. It also says that he will return home alone and find his house taken over by suitors.

Odysseus returns and tells her the prophecy and she tells him about the Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis.

Odysseus covers his mens ears with beeswax and cloth to make sure they cannot listen to the Sirens songs. His men tie him up to the ships mast so he can listen to the sirens without doing anything. Eventually they go away.

Odysseus decides to go through Scylla, the six-headed monster, instead of Charybdis. She eats six of Odysseus's best men, but with constant rowing, they bypass her.

After the encounter with Scylla, they land on Thrinacia, and eat the cattle of Helios, the sun god. Helious threatens to stop shining if payment is not made. Zues strikes Odysseus's ship and all but Odysseus are killed

Odyssues finds himself on Calypso's island. He stays there for 7 years until Athena convinces Zeus to send Hermes to set him free.
