  • Tariff Of Abominations

    Tariff Of Abominations
    This tariff was passed at the instigation of Northern manufacturers and it distressed many of the Southern planters that depended on foreign trade for their income. The agriculture was already suffering due to the soil exhaustion so the tariff didn't make it easier. The Southern farmers began to protest in the newspaper which would lead to another event later on.

    The South Carolina Exposition and Protest
    The legislature of the state of South Carolina declared the tariff to be unconstitutional, and included Calhoun's Doctrine of nullification which gave the states the right to void the tariffs.
  • The Indian Removal Acts

    The Indian Removal Acts
    These were acts that were passed against the Natives that forced them off of their lands. This act would move the Natives west of the Mississippi River, some went peacefully but the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Seminole, Cherokee and Creek, refused to go so they were moved by force. 100,00 tribesmen were forced to go westward by U.S military, and about 25% died along the way giving path they took the name of The Trail of Tears.

    This ordinance declared the previous tariffs that were made in 1828 and 1832 "null and void", it also threatened succession if the government tried to get tariff duties by force. There was a Force Bill that was created by Jackson that stated that federal troops will be used to collect tariff duties if necessary.

    This proclamation was from Jackson, and it was telling the Southerners that they are going to be put into disunion by armed forces which is treason and that there will be consequences if they continue with the act of treason they are about to commit.

    Tariff Compromise Bill by Clay
    Henry Clay had made a Compromise bill with Calhoun that would slowly lower the tariffs over the next 10 years and when this compromise tariff was accepted by South Carolina it put an end to the nullification crisis.
