Three men were brutally murdered. One was a black man by the name of James Chaney, the other two were white men by the names of Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner.

The men were arrested and then at night fall released into the hands of the KKK, who murdered them.

The three men had been working to “register black voters in Mississippi, during the freedom summer. They had gone out that day to investigate the burning of a black church.”
Therefore, anyone who was helping black people at the time was consitered worthy of such treatment. -
The FBI arrested eighteen men who were connected to the murder of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner.

Seven more men were found guilty and arrested for being involved as well.

The ringleader of the KKK was in fact, Edgar Ray Killen. He was charged with the plotting and actual murder of the three men. He was 80 years old, and it was 41 years after everything had actually happened.

He is very much still alive, in prison serving his 180 year sentence.
