    People in the lost generation struggled with shattered ideals about society, gender roles, diplomacy, morality, and other issues. Their commentary on society may not have been well-received at the time, but it went on to make icons out of many of them.

  • What is the lost generation?

    The lost generation defines a sense of moral loss or aimlessness apparent in literary figures during the 1920s. Many good, young men went to war and died, or returned home either physically or mentally wounded (for most, both), and their faith in the moral guideposts that had earlier given them hope, were no longer valid...they were "Lost."

    Music, phonograph and radio. New Orleans captured imagination
    Jazz broke rules of music and dancing. It was improvised and wild. It started everything. "The Great Gatsby" focused on jazz age or was during that time and universal concerns.

    18th amendment established the prohibition of alcoholic beverages. Sale of public alcohol. Night clubs, taverns sold liquor, gangsters made illegal fortunes, bootleggers smuggling.
    Gambling became popular but it was illegal people accepted bribes. They called it "Black Sox Scandal of 1919"

    Womens style started changing. The hairstyle they cut their hair into a boyish "bob" fashionable. This was the behavior decade. Started driving cars like crazy, partying, drugs. Women demanded right to vote and work outside of homes. It was the "new women".

    World War I ended in 1918. People fought and survived the "lost generation". American artists who remain in Europe after war took less action.
  • Automoblie

    Cars were the status symbol. Flashy new automoblies. Reckless driving. Fancy cars. Easier way to get to another place, parties, get illegal things. The automoblie and billboard played important roles in "The Great Gatsby". There was negative review in 1920's newspapers.

    Advertising was major industry, it took advantage of roadways by setting up billboards. Negative reviews in newspapers. It was a quicker way to get a product sold.

    The authors in the lost generation had similar characteristics such as youthful idealism ,sought the meaning of life ,gained prominence in twentieth century literature and created a mold for many future writers.

    New technology took plzace during the lost generation during World War 1. For the first time, tanks, airplanes and machine guns made their way onto the battlefield. These new advances magnified the effects in war by affecting people and determining how war was fought.

    People believed that America was intolerant, materialistic, and unspiritual. Many who had been to war no longer felt the need to return home, instead flocking to cities and even to Europe.

    After the war American Writers felt lost. Many flocked to Paris during the 1920s to escape their traditions at home. These expatriates managed to capture the zeitgeist of the time.

    People in the lost generation often lived a very bohemian lifestyle. They challenged conventional attitudes about appropriate behavior, especially for women, around sexuality. As they struggled with their disillusionment, members also questioned society as a whole.
