Roosevelt begins his second term as U.S. President. 1938 Anne's uncle, Walter, is arrested and sent to a labor camp for being Jewish. 1938 Hitler reunites Austria and Germany. 1939 Germany invades Czechoslovakia and World War II begins. 1941 Nazis decide to ban Jews children from their old schools, but wait until school starts to remove them to make them feel like they do not belong. 1941 The Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor. 1941 The United States join the war. 1942 All Jews over 6 years of age had to wear a yellow Jewish star, known as the Star of David, over their heart 1942 Anne's sister, Margot, was to be sent to a labor camp in Germany; the Frank's go into hiding at the Secret Annex. Period: 1942 to 1943 Twenty to thirty thousand Jews went into hiding. 1943 Food became scarce in the Netherlands and it was hard for the helpers to bring supplies to The Secret Annex. 1944 Italy surrenders in the war. Aug 4, 1944 The Secret Annex is stormed by Nazi police and all eight people in the Annex were put in a concentration camp in Poland. 1945 Anne and Margot come down with a sickness known as Typhus, and they both die. 1945 British soldiers free everyone left in the camp. 1945 Hitler kills himself inside a secret bunker. 1945 Germany surrenders and World War II ends. 1947 Anne's dreams come true after her father publishes her diary and it becomes a book. 1948 After the end of the war, the new state of Israel is born and the Israel flag holds the Star of David on it. 1960 John F. Kennedy is elected U.S. President. 1960 The Secret Annex is open to the public. 1980 Anne's father, Otto Frank, dies.
