"Ulrich von Gradwitz Awaits his Enemy in the Fores"
Ulrich von Gradwitz stood wait in the forest. Looking for his human enemy. He was standing in a wooden strip of land his grandfather won, in a lawsuit, against their petty neighbor. This hate between families has been ongoing for three generations and has now turned personal. -
"Face to Face at Last"
Georg Znayem appears from behind a large tree trunk. The two enemies are face to face. Each has a rifle at hand. -
"Nature's violence knows no Man"
Nature’s violence overwhelmed them. A large tree fell on them before either man could leap aside.Ulrich had one numb arm along with his legs pinned under the tree. A twig has cut his brow and blood is pooling on his eye lashes, Georg was also helplessly pinned under the tree with his brow slashed. -
"The Hate Continues..."
The men out of hate wish that the other one was crushed and killed by the tree. The hate still continues when Gerog breaks the silence. "So you're not killed, as you ought to be, but you're caught, anyway," he cried; "caught fast. Ho, what a jest, Ulrich von Gradwitz snared in his stolen forest. There's real justice for you!" -
"Strength Can't Fix This"
Both men have now given up the struggle to free themselves. Ulrich brings out a flask from is coat pocket. Ulrich does something unexpected.
"Could you reach this flask if I threw it over to you?" asked Ulrich
suddenly; "there is good wine in it, and one may as well be as comfortable
as one can. Let us drink, even if to-night one of us dies." "No, I can scarcely see anything; there is so much blood caked round my
eyes," said Georg, "and in any case I don't drink wine with an enemy." -
"The Hate seems to Disappear"
As both men lay there Ulrich looks at his life long enemy and in the pain that both of them are suffering the old fierce hate seemed to be dying down. -
"From Enemies to Friends"
Ulrichand George Apoligized to each other for the long year sof hate. They chuckled at the idea of what people would say if they rode to town in abuggy together. They went from life long enemies to friends in a matter of a few seconds. -
"Is there Anything that can be Done?"
After a prolonged silence Ulrich suggests that they cry for help. in the hope that one of their en will ear them and come to the rescue. -
"Maybe Help has Come After All"
"Are they your men?" asked Georg. "Are they your men?" he repeated
impatiently as Ulrich did not answer.
"No," said Ulrich with a laugh, the idiotic chattering laugh of a man
unstrung with hideous fear.
"Who are they?" asked Georg quickly, straining his eyes to see what the
other would gladly not have seen.
"Wolves."
