    The Special Olympics were started at Camp Shiver, founded by Eunice Shiver, in the 1960s as just camp games.
  • Legislation was passed for the Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Legislation was passed for the Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    This legislation was part of Public Law 94-142, and it provided rights to all disabled individuals for a free, appropriate public education.

    This civil rights law was passed to ensure the rights of all disabled and to ensure these individuals could not be discriminated against when applying for jobs, schools, or extracurriculars.

    The act was passed in 2001, but it was the beginning of the next year before President G. W. Bush signed. This act made it where all student data must be counted which required all public educational institutes to ensure they were provided equal education to all students.

    The law was just an improved version of the IDEA passed in 1990, but it mandates the equity, accountability and excellence in education for disabled children.
  • Every Child Succeeds Act

    Every Child Succeeds Act

    Signed by President Obama, this act resulted in the the Multi-Tiered System of Support which combined the RTI support process with the ideas of rewarding positive behavior. In addition, this act ensured the advancement of equity in education for disadvantaged and high-needs students by requiring that all students be taught to high academic standards.
