The History of Special Education

  • American School for the Deaf is founded

    The school was originally known as an asylum for the education and instruction of the deaf and dumb. It became the first permanent school for hearing impaired and deaf individuals.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    This court case ruled that separate is not equal in terms of racial segregation. This case sparked the same ideas in special education schooling that separate schools for individuals with disabilities is not equal.
  • Walmart was founded in Arkansas

  • Community Mental Health Act

    President John F. Kennedy introduced new institutions with comprehensive mental health centers that changed how mental health services were enacted. This helped individuals with mental illnesses take part in their communities.
  • Apollo 11 Landed on the Moon

  • Mills v. Board of Education of District of Columbia

    This court case ruled that even if they are not able to pay for their education, individuals with disabilities must still be given a public education. This case exhibited the right to a free public education.
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

    A civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against those with disabilities. It also provides equal access to education for all students with disabilities.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    This act guaranteed the right to FAPE, a free and appropriate public education. This act was signed by President Ford and was also known as Public Law 94-142.

  • Handicapped Children's Protection Act

    This act requires teachers to keep parent informed of their child's education. It also allows teachers to work alongside parents, administrators and others to ensure that the child is receiving appropriate support.
  • The Education for All Handicapped Children (1975) was renamed to the Individuals with Disabilities Act

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ensured a free and appropriate public education for students. It also gave specialized education to individuals with disabilities.
