    The Captaincy General of Guatemala was dissolved in September 1821, and Nicaragua soon became part of the First Mexican Empire. After the monarchy of the First Mexican Empire was overthrown in 1823, Nicaragua joined newly formed United Provinces of Central America. Nicaragua finally became an independent republic in 1838.
    Today, there is a parade in the capital city of Managua, and the president and other public officials give speeches. Nicaraguans also celebrate by attending bullfights.

    Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, a socialist former guerrilla leader, was re-elected for his third term. Ortega was part of the Sandinista National Liberation Front Party with a leading 62.46% votes; Fabio Gadea, representing the Independent Liberal Party, followed with 31%. Jose Arnoldo with the Constituationalist Liberal Party placed third with 5.91% votes, while Edgar Enrique from the Nicaragua Liberal Alliance and Roger Antonio from the Alliance for the Republic made up the remaining .63%
