The History of Gender in Kitchens

    Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, women were focused on tending to the farm animals, children, and cooking. Women were seen as “empathetic” and “weak” so they were kept at home. Men weren’t limited to physical strength so they would be the ones going out to get the food for dinner and also were responsible for more taxing jobs.
  • Industrial Revolution

Men started strayed from the choice of providing for the family and instead turned their work into profit. The Industrial Revolution provided money for hard work, which men dominated. Women are still restrained to the kitchen and only a small portion of them were able to get jobs. Women started wanting more than their stay at home positions.
  • World War II

In the height of the war, women started getting jobs in factories and healthcare to help aide the war. “More than six million women took wartime jobs in factories, three million volunteered with the Red Cross, and over 200,000 served in the military.” according to The National World War II museum. This helped women experience life outside of home and motivating them to become more than stay at home moms.
  • Women’s Rights Movement

Women started to fight for equal treatment between them and men. They start protesting and demanding equalities to pass in senate. New laws start forming that allow women more freedoms including:
    - The right to vote
    - Eliminating workplace discrimination against sex, race, religion, or national origin
    - Equal access to higher education
    - The ability to participate on competitive sports teams
    And many more.
This led to women seeking to do more with their life now that they gained the ability to.
  • Present Day

Women now have access to the same jobs and opportunities as men, women hold more of a right to get a job and get out of the house. Women have been stripped of this stereotype that they must stay at home and watch over the children while taking care of the house. While women still are known to make dinner, men now also step up to the plate and do the same. Women are much more focused on their education and jobs now instead of what their husband will eat when they arrive home from work.
