The History of Elizabeth, NJ

  • Elizabethtown is founded

    On this day Elizabethtown becomes a formal settlement. This was done when a group of Englishmen (The Elizabethtown Associates) who came from long island and bought land from the Enape Sachem, and Mattano It is the first English community in New Jersey.
  • Goerge Washington march through Elizabeth

    George washington marches his ary of 3,500 troops. They had been recently driven from Fort Lee, NJ through Elizabeth NJ by the British General Lord Willam Howe, along with 6,000 British and Hessian troops who ocupied the town in december
  • stagecoach comes to Elizabeth

    This year the first stagecoach line is established between Elizabeth and Princeton. Later in 1787 regular stagecoach lines between Elizabethtown and Morris town were also established.
  • Abraham Lincoln's brief stop in elizabeth

    Abraham Lincoln travels from new York City and staops in Elizabeth on his way to Trenton and Philadelphia. In Elizabeth, Mayor J. J. Chatwood offers him welcome and Licoln replies from the train platform, (very aware) that NJ as a state voted for his democratic opponent in the 1860 presidential election. that nioght he stayed in Pjiladelphia where he learned of a plot for his assassination, he assumes a disguise and takes a different train from Harrisburg to Baltimore and eventually arrived safe
  • Franklin Leonard Pope and the Telegraph

    Franklin Pope according to the Federal census, resided at 235 Marris ave. he worked for many tyears for the innovative American Telegraph Co. and in 1869 worked on the creation and refinement of the stock ticker alogn with Thomas Alva Edison in NYC. in 1869-70 created the Pope Edison & Co. and had Edison reside at his home on Morris ave.
  • The Singer factory

    I. M. Singer establishes his sewing machine factory on newark bay, a 32 acre plot on the former site of Crane's Ferry. he builds a workforce of six thousand employees, at the time it was the largest in the world. the company remained an economic mainstay of Elizabeth until 1982
  • John H. Kean

    John H. Kean the president of Elizabeth Gas Light co. and founder of the Elizabethport co., accepted election to the US Congress, he again elected in 1886, 1889, and 1905 to the senate while residing in Liberty Hall on Morris Ave.
  • The famous stone briges of Elizabeth

    during this year the stone arches over Broad street were built. the Pensyvania Rail Road built these as part of the 1890-1905 modernization of connection from Jersey City to Chicago.
  • Union County Courthouse is built

    The Union Court House was built during this year. The tower was added in 1923.
  • The Altenburg piano house

    in 1847 altenburg painos was founded in Germany and in 1855 the Altenburgs moved to New York and New Jersey in 1906. By 1910 the paino house flourished. the piano house is still in business to this day at 1050 East Jersey ave. in Elizabeth.
  • the duesenberg brothers

    on July 25, 1021 the only American car to have won the La Mans Grand prix race acomplished that on this day. the car was bulit by Fredrick S. and Augustus S. Duesenberg. they live on Kysyth rd., one block away from Newark ave. which was where the Duesenberg auto factoy was located. the duesenberg factory was actually what current locals knew as the interbake foods bakery factory or the big cookie factory that burned down very recently. The brothers were born in Germany and migrated here in 1885.
  • the Gothals Bridge opens

    On this date the Gotals brdige opens up for use, that same day the outer bridge opened also. the Gothals spans from Arthur kill in Elizabeth to Howland Hook in staten Islnad. the BGridge memorialized Major General George Washington Gothals, the priciple builder of the Panama canal, and the Panama first zone's governor
  • Mayor Thomas Dunn

    in 1964 Thomas Dunn was elected into the mayoral office in Elizabeth. Mr Dunn remanined in office until 1992, his term lasted 28 years and was at the time the longest term served by an elect mayor.
  • massive train derailment

    on Novermber 4th the WestboundCentral RR of NJ derails and wrecks the train station in Elizabeth, opposite of Old Railroad tower. there were no fatalioties in spite of a complete building destruction and demolition of 600 feet of track.
  • the closing of The daily Journal

    on this day The Daily Journal closed its doors. Its first publication on February 16,1779. the the time it closed it hsad a circulation on 30,000. The Daily Journal ran for 212 years
  • The opening of Jersey Gardens Mall

    On this date the outlet mall opened its doors to shoppers. it generated 15 million shppoers its first year and 2 million dollars worth of revenues for the city in taxes and other sources.
  • Loss of some of our own

    On September 11, 2001 Elizabeth lost 5 of its residents at the world trade center attacks. it is also commented that there were other citizens of elizabeth that parished in the attacks but this was unconfirmed do the individuals being undocumented.
  • Martha Washignton

    Martha Washington stays at Governor William Livongston's Liberty Hall on Morris avenue. She was en route to New York City innaguration of her husband as first president. George Washington had traveled through through Elizabethtown on his innaguration route.
