    A call to reform the United States’ public education is made. This includes making computer science a partner of the curriculum and training our educators more effectively. This is important because it made education more modern.
  • Columbia College

    Columbia College becomes the last Ivy League school to allow women to enroll. This is important because it meant more of an equal opportunity for women in the education world.
  • Wallace V. Jaffree

    A court case ruled that Alabama school led prayer violated the first amendment. This is important because it enforces the rule of leaving religion out of school which was not heavily done.
  • Edwards V. Augillard

    A court case ruling that creating science be taught as well as evolution. There is great importance in this case because it made education more equal to different religious perspectives.
  • First Online Campus

    The University of Phoenix established an online educational program which allowed students to get masters and bachelors degrees. This is important because it set the stage for online college, and allowed many more people access to education who may not be able to devote as much time to college as those who are on campus.
  • Computer Communication

    Tim Burner creates the first system allowing two computers to communicate with each other. This is extremely important to education because it makes communication among students and teachers much more efficient.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    This law prohibited discrimination of any kind for any disability, especially in education. It an important law because it was a civil rights law, and expanded education for disabled peoples.
  • Columbine

    At columbine High School in Colorado, two students embark on a killing spree leaving 15 others dead. The importance of this event, however sad, lies in the change of security in schools, and a higher level of safety needs.
  • Santa Fe School District V. Doe

    Another court case ruling student lead prayer violates the first amenment of the constitution, especially the establishment clause. This is important because it further establishes the rule prohibiting religion in school.
  • No Child Left Behind

    This act established test taking that tracked the progress of students, and held the teachers accountable for a lack of progression. This is important because there is still controversy today over whether teachers are to blame for students not succeeding.
  • Virginia Tech Shooting

    A student at Virginia Tech kills two students in a dorm and 30 other students in classrooms. This event is important because it raises even more concern for security on campuses, and brings colleges into the picture for school shootings.
  • Quest 2 Learn

    A game-based learning school emerges in New York. This is important because it makes immense progress in expanding the educational world to different types of learners.
  • Movement Against Standardized Testing

    A Seattle high school is refusing to give reports of progress for their students, in a protest against standardized testing. This is important because it sets the stage for the still growing revolt against standardized tests.
  • Gender Indetity Bathroom Case

    The federal government says that schools are required to allow transgender students to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with. If not they could face lawsuits or withdrawal of aid. This is extremely important because until this event, the rights of transgender students were not taken seriously, or really payed attention to.
  • March For Our Lives

    Hundreds of thousands of students across the country join in Washington, D.C. and many other large cities in the March for Our Lives. This event is critically important because it was the first time students seriously protested in an attempt to change gun laws. It was very powerful in the movement against gun violence.
