The Austrian navy used a series of unmanned balloons in 1849, to attack an italian city. They were guided by winds, and had only limited success. It was, however, the first recorded use of unmanned aircaft in history. -

During Operation Aphrodite, a formation of B-17 and B-24 bombers were supposed to be used as aerial torpedos in an attack against a large dam. PIlots had to fly the planes until they were within a certain range, bail out, and from there the planes were intended to be controlled via radio. -
