  • Slaves Demand Equality

    Slaves learn about the "Declaration of the Rights of Men" and want to be treated equally. The Whites of the Island deny them their rights or freedom.

  • There was already a large social divide

    The different classes were segregated by race and power and this caused a strain.

  • Start of French Revolution

    The minority of Whites in Haiti split into two groups: revolutionists and royalists. The slaves of the island saw an opportunity and started to rebel.

  • Creoles and Africans Join Together

    They both make a pact against the Whites to rebel.

  • “All the proprietors ought to be active citizens” Amendment

    This ammendment was passed in Paris but excluded the petit blancs. This made people angry.

  • Boukman Dutty Starts Uprising Amongst Slaves

    They attacked the Whites of the island and destroyed plantations.

  • People of Color are given freedom in Haiti

  • Horrible Massacre in Port-au-Prince

    The Petit Blancs murder a large majority of people of color in Port-au-Prince.

  • French Arrive in Saint-Domingue with 6,000 troops

    The commissioners could not bring peace to Saint-Domingue with 6,000 troops.

  • Lack of plantations lead to lack of economy

    L'Ouverture faces econmic problems due to there being no source of agriculture and in result forces African citizens to work again.

  • L'Ouverture Dies in Prison

  • Haitian Rev. Lead to Louisiana Purchase

    The land was purchased from France. Napoleon needed money to fund the counter attacks in Haiti. The Louisiana Purchase led to tension in the United States.

  • Napoleon Calls back his army

  • French Surrender and Haiti declares independence
