The rebellion started in March of 1837 when Lord Gosford, the Governor of Lower Canada, was ordered by the British Government to ignore the need for Legislative approval of bills and pay for the expenses of the government directly from crown funds.

On October 23, 1837 Papineau called for a meeting at St Charles, of all "patriotes", who were the reform minded French Canadians. The topic of the meeting was to oppose what Papineau and others felt was the violation of their rights

Wolfred Nelson organized a force of men and led them against the British at Saint Charles on November 25th, 1837. They initially had success when they defeated the British but two days later the British counter attacked and defeated them on November 27th and then again at Saint Eustache on December 14th. The Lower Canada Rebellion lasted from October 1837 to November 1838.

The Irish potato famine starts
-
The Irish potato famine lasted 4 years from September 1845 - 1849. The potato famine was cause by a disease called Late Blight which caused the potato plants to fail. The famine made it very hard for the farmers to provide for their families and for the market. Canada was growing in popularity so large numbers of the Irish immigrated to Canada to escape the hunger.
