    Hundred Flowers Campaign

    Chairman Mao learned from other totalitarian regimes that if the people could not criticize the government, their protest would eventually violently erupt. To prevent this from happening in China, he started the Hundred Flowers Campaign, encouraging criticism of the government. Until February 1, when Mao spoke out to encourage criticism, the campaign was not successful. The campaign ended later when Mao decided the criticism was too harsh.
