The French Revolution

By F0RG3RY
  • The Storming of the Bastille

The Bastille was a huge military storehouse and fort, and was considered a symbol of the government, which was viewed as a not so good group by the lower class. So, the citizens stormed it, with the soldiers supposed to stop them joining instead.
Government: Lost a huge amount support from the masses, as well as money and power, and a fort.
Nobles: Scared, because if the peasants can beat the military, what happens to us?
Lower class: Victorious, 'cuz' they beat the military, and the government
  • Declaration of the Rights of man.

This was a philosophical idea that government should protect citizens natural rights.
Government: Nervous, because they haven't been doing that
Nobles: Really scared now, because they've been treating people the worse, and manipulating.
Lower Class: Really happy, because now their homes, lives, and freedom are safe.
  • Civil Constitution of the Clergy

The National assembly, mostly in order to gain more funding, approved a law that restricted the church's power, and claimed the church's property as the government's
Government: Happy, because they gained money and power over the church.
King: Nervous, due to the fact that his biggest supporter just got attacked by his enemies.
Peasants: Angry and rebellious. Would often hide Priests that were on the run or in exile.
  • France's constitution

France voted for a constitutional monarchy, like England. The king tried to flee due to a dramatic drop in power to Austria, but was caught and brought back to Paris for... trial.
Government: Both happy and sad. New government happy that the king was forced back to France.
Monarch: Really freaking scared, because his own country basically had a kill/capture order on him and his family.
Lower Class: Confident and happy, because changes for them are being made. At least, relatively for them
  • War declared on Austria

France declared War on Austria in order to spread the revolution. It was also done to protect their new government.
Government: Confident and determined, because they were sure that this war would assure their revolution would spread to their neighbors.
Monarch: Cornered, because his wife is from Austria. No matter how much the in-laws hate you, you don't want to hurt them.
Lower class: Along for the ride. Most were drafted, so they didn't really want to go to war, but will because Revolution.
  • Call for New Elections.

Austria and Prussia declare their desire to end the revolution. This made the lower class become the revolution leaders. Demanded change from the National Assembly. National Assembly called for a new vote.
Government: Pressured, because the commoners literally forced them to cast a vote.
Monarch: Unknown. Document doesn't say what happened to the king right now.
Lower Class: Suddenly full of power, so I assume a little off guard, and excited t all the new possibilities.
  • National Convention Ruling

The Lower class' forced vote brought forth the National Convention. This political change led to new political parties forming, like the Jacobins, the Girondins, and the Mountain.
Governement: New ideas, new parties, and new ways to take control and "push" the revolution.
King: He was executed by the parties. No more king
Lower Class: Overjoyed, because they finally got a governement like they've always wanted, or at least like what they think they wanted.
  • Period: to

Immediate Aftermath of the King's Execution.

King went and got himself executed, and everybody else enjoyed that. But, the Commitee for Public Safety was formed, and began putting Giordins on "trial", then executing.
Government: sared and somewhat insane, since they executed almost 30 people. Did protect France though, so not all bad.
Lower Class: Felt that they had a reason to fight, so they were actually somewhat happy.
  • Period: to

The Peasants Begin Revolting Against the Revolution

Peasants began a rebellion against the new France, due to all the executions and bad stuff that happened. Government sends there best executioners. They aslo made there own religion, measuring system, and calender.
Government: No clue on what to do, so they make everything new for no reason. And murder a crap ton of people. So, pretty bad and crazy.
lower class: Really scared. many try to hide and flee. Some brave souls start to fight back
  • The Thermidorian Reaction of July 1794

Robespierre, the big guy in charge of the Commitee, was so psychotic that the other revolutionaries end up executing him, thus ending, to a certain degree, the Reign of Terror.
Government: I would assume, ashamed, because they had to admit their mistake, and no government does that easily
Lower class: Relieved. Their nightmares are over.
  • Constitution Number 2

The National Convention made a new constitution, yhis one more like an American Democratic System. In charge, however, are five people, instead of one. These five are referred to as the Directory. less attacking religion and upper class, moe voting. Led the war with officers promoted through duty.
Government: Quite a bit better, and a little more liked by the people.
lower class: still aren't the biggest fans of the government, but don't exactly hate them either.
  • Napoleon's first Glory

Young artillery officer Napoleon Bonaparte makes the army under his command an unstoppable force in the war, gaining huge respect from France, and huge victories from Austria's ally, Italy.
Governmet: Excited. They're winning the wrar, after all.
Lower Class: Absolutely begin to fall head oer heels for this guy.
  • Period: to

Napoleon Becomes loved by the Lower Class

The army and the lower class begin to idolize Napoleon much like people idolize Keanu Reeves today. The Directory doesn't like this at all, so they try to send hinm to a lost cause: the war in egypt with Britain. They did lose, but it somehow made Napoleon look een better to the People.
Government. Infuriated at the upstart young officer, because he's loved by the people more than they are.
Lower Class: Now 100% behind this legendary young hero of the People.
  • Napoleon Becomes France's Ruler

Realizing the support he has, him and his platoon march into the Government building, and demands to be made the ruler of France. They say no. Lower class gets invlved. Then ythey say yes, making napoleon the First Consul of France.
Government. Sad, because they just lost virtually all their power.
Lower Class: Words cannot convey how happy and excited they are to see their hero become the new ruler
