    Virginia was the first permanent English colony in North America. The first colonists came to Virginia to search for gold. When they realized that there was no gold there, many started plantations on the rich soil tide water.

    Massachusetts was founded
    The puitans were English colonialist. They settled in New England, so they could follow the rules of the Bible and serve their God.

    In Plymouth colonist were friends with the Natives Americans. They tott them how to grow food.
  • New York was founded

    New York was founded
    as proprietor of New Nether land, James could do what he liked with the land. He kept part of the large colony and changed its name to New York.

    The colony of Maryland in 1632. King Charles I of England gave land in North America to Cecilius Calvert.

    Roger Williams was a dissenter who wanted more religious freedom. Puritan leaders however believed that everyone had to follow the same laws.

    The duke of York later gave pen even more land. For a time a time this land was part of Pennsylvania, but later it can the colony of Delaware.

    North Carolina was founded.
    During the late 1600's, England, France, and Spain all claimed land that was South of Virginia. In 1729, Carolina became two colonies, North Carolina and south Carolina.

    South Carolina was fonded.
    Colonists first settled in the Southern part of Carolina. The southern area had good farm land and many excellent harbors.
  • New Jersey was founded

    New Jersey was founded
    Berkeley and Carteret divided their land into two colonies East Jersey and West Jersey. In 1702, the colonies joined to form New Jersey.
