  • The discovery at Punta Alta

While doing a geological survey of the area around Punta Alta Darwin discovered unusually large fossils. After further examination they appeared to be much larger versions of armadillo and sloth like creatures. This discovery brought the first question about how animals form generations ago could be so very different in size and yet similar in body composition. This lead him to think that these animals might have changed over time.

    Discoveries in Chile

While Darwin was surveying coastal areas of Chile a large earthquake rocked the area. After this event in several areas Darwin discovered area of land that had been shifted for generations revealing considerable layers of sedimentary rock and even petrified trees. This led Darwin to believe more thoroughly in the concepts of tectonic activity and the evolution of the earths surface as well.

The survey of the Galapagos Islands

Darwin's most noted discoveries were those he made at the Galapagos islands. This is where he discovered various species of animals that had either slight differences from each other, or from a common animal in another location. This was where most of most of the evidence for his Theory of evolution came from as didn't it make more sense for these animals to have come from a common ancestor and to have changed, rather than for there to be so many separate species.
  • On the Origin of Species is released

Darwin's Book On the Origin of Species was an unexpected best seller as soon as it was released. It was so acclaimed because it dared to question what others had taken for granted, that maybe life was created through intelligent design but was instead crafted and molded by it's environment. the became a major turning point in how the world look and both religion and the world around it, and started to raise more questions about the origin of not only animals but humans too.
