Turning Point: The diary allows her to consider doing more critical thinking, and reflecting more often about her actions, words, and thoughts. This marks the beginning of maturity.
Relation to the theme: This correlates to the theme because she is able to begin self-reflecting, and even consider changing for the better. -
Anne & her family move into the secret annex
Summary: Margot Frank (Anne's sister), receives a letter for her to a work camp, and the family decides to go into hiding.
Turning Point: From this moment on, Anne's life will never be the same as it was before. Everything from now on will be a new experience for Anne, as moving is a substantial change.
Theme: This event is relevant to the theme because it forces Anne outside of her comfort zone, and literally have to go into hiding. This event will change her life forever. -
The Van Daans arrive to the secret annex.
Summary: The Van Daan's arrival to the secret annex is when Anne meets each individual member for the first time.
Turning Point: These new characters introduced in Anne's life will forever affect Anne and her future.
Theme: Meeting more people equals more opportunities to have people to trust or depend on, Anne meeting the Van Daans gives her the chance to start a new relationship with someone. -
Anne reflects on her personality/ thinks about how she's changed
Summary: Anne vents to Kitty about how she's been more kind or considerate to the people around her, but still feels rage inside.
Character Development: This is surprising to see how Anne is trying so much to make everyone feel better despite being annoyed, it tells a lot about her character since she's always been a bit childish since the beginning.
Theme: This adds to the theme, and shows how Anne is trying to set a better example for herself, even building healthy relationships. -
Anne contemplates having a future with Peter outside the secret annex.
Summary: After Peter tells Anne how he appreciates her comforting him after their parent's fights, she says it brought them one step closer, and how she thinks of him growing older.
Character Development: We can see Anne's ideals/values begin to change, as she thinks of peter as a soulmate.
Theme: This highlights how Anne is seriously considering the future. Peter has always a dear friend, but thinking of their relationship going further shows how dedicated she is. -
Anne & Peter have their first kiss
Summary: Anne receives her first kiss from Peter, and says to remember it as it is one of the most important days in her life.
Character Development: Receiving your first kiss is a big milestone in anyone's life. So when Anne gets hers from peter, she is taken back yet content at the same time.
Theme: Anne's first kiss is the jumpstart of her thinking about Peter more romantically instead of the "shy, awkward boy" he once was. When Anne got to know Peter, she appreciated him a lot more. -
Anne's father breaks down during a long conversation with Anne
Summary: Anne cries in front of her father during a suspenseful conversation to make him show her respect, and her father ends up feeling disappointed.
Character Development: This is a huge event in this story since she's always liked him more than her mother, it shows that Anne can't keep repeating the same mistakes, especially since she's older now.
Theme: This just reveals how the things you do, say, or think affect people as you get older, and how Anne must be kind/ considerate. -
