The beginning of the story starts our with Tom Walker walking through the woods and meeting the "black man" who told him that he could make Tom wealthy.

Tom and his wife are having problems and his wife ended up taking all of his valuable items from the house so he ends up making a deal with the black man in the woods to become very rich.

Tom starts to go to church more because he is worried about is soul. He regrets making a deal with the black man and is later confronted by the devil.

Tom is picked up and thrown on the horse then is forced to ride away.

The townspeople go looking for Tom's riches that he left behind, but they find nothing. Tom was never seen again.
