The Development of Travel and Tourism

  • ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents)

    ABTA are commited to following a strict code of conduct, they provide schemes of financial protection and a course of redress if something goes wrong. They raise standards in the industry and give guidance on issues such as health and safety. It has effected the industry as by ensuring the public get a fair deal and it has made holiday makers remain confident and happy in the products they buy.
  • FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office)

    The FCO is a department of the UK's government. Its responsible for protecting and promoting the UK interests worldwide. It was created by merging the foreign office and the commonwealth office.The FCO is responsible for safeguarding Britains national security and working to reduce conflict, building Britains prosperity and supporting British national around the world. This has affected people by protecting them from any danger that they could come across when visiting different countries.
  • Trade Description Act

    The Trade Descriptions Act makes it an offence for a trader to make false or misleading statements about goods or services. It carries criminal penalties and is enforced by Trading Standards Officers. This has affected the industry as it means customers aren't being ripped off and are guranteed to get what is excpected.
  • Launch of 747 Jumbo jet

    Boing produced the 747 jumbo jet, it cruises at about 965 km per hour. It made long-haul destinations more accessible as it could fly further in less time and it had increased capacity. This affected the industry as it caused more people to decide to travel to long-haul destinations.
  • Development of Tourism Act

    First piece of legalisation put in place in the travel and tourism industry. It founded the British tourist authority and the English, Welsh and Scottish tourist boards. This affected the industry by developing tourism within Great Britain such as giving financial assistance for the provision of new hotels and the extension, alteration and improvement of existing hotels.
  • ATOL (Air Travel Organiser Licensing)

    ATOL was funded after the travel industry took off, it protects holiday makers from losing their money. It also protects you against package holidays, flights and car hire and it also covers cruises. If a business you have booked with collapses before you have left the UK, ATOL makes sure you get a full refund. ATOL is ran by the CAA. ATOL made tourists feel more confident about travelling.
  • Package Holidays

    The first package holiday was organised by Vladimir Raitz. This package included accommodation, return flights, transfers and full board. Package holidays became more popular in the 1970s as more people wanted to see new places. Package holidays have affected the industry by spreading the economic benefits of tourism world wide.
  • CAA (Civil Aviation Authority)

    The CAA is the governing body which overseas aviation. It is responsible fore the safety and managment of air space, Economic regulations, enforcement of consumer protection rules (eg.cancelled flights), and the enforcement of regulations and requirements(e.g transporting dangerous objects and goods by air)
  • Unfair Contract Terms

    This act protects consumers against unfair standard terms in contracts they make with traders. It allows consumers to challenge terms in any contract they've signed. Transactions between businesses are covered by the UCTA. The act places a number of restrictions on the contract terms businesses can agree to. This act caused there to be more trade as businessses felt more confident about signing contracts as they knew they were protected.
  • Health and Safety Act

    This act means employers have to provide a high standard of health and safety conditions in the workplace. It requires that employers are reasonably responsible for for the welfare of employees and anyone in the general public who might be affected. This affected the industry as it made people feel safer and protected if there was any accidents.
  • Concorde came into service

    Concourde flew to routes in less than half the time of other airliners. It continued commercial flights for 27 years.In April 2003 British Airways and Air France announced the plane would be retired due to falling passenger revenue and rising maintenance costs.
  • AITO (Association of independent tour operators)

    They specialise in offering you an unrivalled collection of financially protected, quality holidays. Members are not linked to any large travel conglomerate, they are small family run businesses and their knowledge and experiance is freely available to you. This affected the industry by making more people travel abroad as they felt safer and more protected.
  • Consumer Protection Act

    This act makes it a criminal offence for an organisation to give misleading information that could be mis-sold to customers in accomodation or flights. This act comes into place when a price of a hotel or flight is greater than expected, if something has been described as available when it isnt and also if available facilitys are shown but not told they have to be payed as added extras. It has a special significance to travel and tourism as it ensures pricing and images in brochures are correct.
  • Launch of the Package Travel Regulations

    These regulations meant people buying package holidays from tour operators were more protected and had access to compensation. They provide info to customers on the organiser they have booked with, clear contract terms, emergancy numbers, proof or the organisers security against insolvency and info on available insurance policies, giving imediate notification of any increased prices and providing compensation options and accurate promotion material.
  • Privatisation of the British Rail

    The british rail was the operator of most of the rail transport in Great Britain between 1948 and 1997. It was formed from the nationalisation of the "Big Four" British railway companies and lasted until the gradual privatisation of British Rail. This made it easier, quicker and cheaper for people to travel to different places.
  • Channel Tunnel opened

    The tunnel was built to allow the British to leave their island without flying or getting sea-sickness and also to encourage continental neighbours to visit the UK. This made people who didn't want to or couldnt fly, able to travel to different destinations.
  • easyJet launched

    easyJet is the largest airport in the UK. They operate on over 600 routes across over 30 countries. easyJet has seen rapid expansion since its establishment in 1995. This increased tourism as more people could afford to travel abroad.
  • Disability Discrimination Act

    This act aims to end the discrimination that faces many people with disabilities. It now gives people with disabilities rights in the areas of employment, education
    access to goods, facilities and services. The legislation requires public bodies to promote equality of opportunity for people with disabilities. This affected the industry as it gave disabled people more confidence to travel and it made it accesable for them to use public transport and stay over in hotels etc.
  • Introduction of Expedia

    The introduction of Expedia made it available for customers to book holidays from their home. this meant it was easier and quicker for people to book holidays. This had an effect on the industry as more people had time to book a holiday and get quick last minute deals, so tourism had an increase.
  • Employee Rights Act

    Under this act the employer must give the employee a written document within two months of starting work, which includes: name of the employee and employer, date employement began, rate of pay, hours of work, holiday entitlement, job title, place of work, sick leave, pension and pension schemes, disaplinary procedures and date of employement end if fixed term. This meant that the employee was protected and had rights if they were being treated unfairly.
  • Saga

    This company established in 1996 and specialises in holidays for the 'grey market'. This company has had a growth as older people are now in better health and have more time to go away. This has effected the travel and tourism industry by creating more income because older people tend to have more money to spend.
  • Data Protection Act

    This act protects peoples information and controls how it is used. It ensures that any information given is only used and held is only given to the information commisioner, that is it kept adequate, isnt kept longer than needed (few years at the most), information is up to date and kept safe and secure, and makes sure that the file is not transferred outside the European economic area.
  • Introduction of the Euro Currency

    The euro is the single currency shared by (currently) 17 of the European Union's Member States, which together make up the euro area. The introduction of the euro in 1999 was a major step in European integration, around 330 million EU citizens now use it as their currency. It has affected the industry by encouraging more people to travel as it is easier and more accessable.
  • Merger of Thomson Holidays and First Choice

    Thomson and First Choice merged in 2007 and TUI UK currently has 505 Thomson stores and 215 First Choice Stores. By merging together it has caused the comapanys to get more customers and become bigger and more popular.
  • Mintel report

    According to a Mintel Report in 2008, an estimated 7million UK resident adults take two or more European holidays and an estimated 1.7 million take two or more long-haul trips annually, this is because people are able to take more holidays from work. This has affected the industry by creating more income from people spending money and also creating more jobs in tourism.
