The Day in the Life of an Acadian

  • Waking Up

    Waking Up

    The average Acadian would wake up at around 6:00 am, to get ready for the day ahead. They would have breakfast, which consisted of mainly berries and bread. Also, they would have to wake up the entire family before settling down for breakfast.
  • Tending to the Garden

    Tending to the Garden

    With a breakfast in the average Acadian's belt, that person would usually go out and tend to the garden to make sure that none of the crops were ruined, stolen or eaten by wild animals. In this garden, they mainly grew apples, oranges, carrots and perhaps some kale.
  • Going to the Church

    On Saturdays and Sundays (either one of these days), the family would go to church and pray there. The Acadians were mostly Catholic because their descendants, the French, were Catholic, and it is assumed that the religion is passed down from generation to generation.
  • Gathering Food for the Winter

    Gathering Food for the Winter

    As winter was coming along soon, it was going to be cold, and when it's cold, you need food, and when it's winter, you can't plant and harvest food. The Acadian family would spend some time to harvest vegetables and maybe kill some animals (for meat) to prepare for the upcoming season, as it if they acted later, it might be too late.
  • Lunch

    After some hard work in the morning, the typical Acadian family sat down to have some lunch. Their lunch usually consisted of pies (also usually of meat), and some salad, as well as some special French dressing.
  • Cleaning the House/Children Playing

    Cleaning the House/Children Playing

    During this time of year, the day would be now split into 2 different activites; the parents cleaning the house, while the children having fun playing outside.
    With winter coming up, as well as the freezing weather, the family would have to spend more time indoors, thus resulting on the mother frequently cleaning the house.
    Now, the children don't really have much to do, so what they do is they go outside and play what we would play outside nowadays, such as games like tag.
  • Dinner

    Dinner

    When the parents finish cleaning the house, the family comes back to have dinner. Usually, they had more meat and a bit of leftovers from lunch, but that was it. They also had more berries, as well as the fact that during the winter, the meat would be salted (to preserve it).
  • Fun and Games

    Fun and Games

    After a long day of work, typically, the family would have some fun now. Their games consisted of card games, and simple talks. There were snacks, and they consisted of mixed berries, or a little bread.
  • Sleep

    At the end of a long day, the family is now very tired, and needs to get rest for the next day, that will be equally tiring and challenging. The children go first, and then the parents.
